Hey all,
So been trying to practice dithering , I'm still pretty new to pixel art, and I've come to the conclusion while I understand the concept (or I think I do) I don't seem to understand the execution. Using something beyond the checkerboard pattern or just stick to it. when to apply different pattern and where? I included a couple attempts below if someone can point out where I am going wrong. linear attempt:
sphere attempt:

Don't look at the dither. Look at the values.

Whatever is between it. Don't look at light or dark by themselves. Look at them together.
If you see a distinction, look between that. |

Ask yourself why you are dithering.
I'm assuming it is because you're trying to convey a transition between one value and another. Dither is just some terminology related to blending the values to give the impression of more. There are many ways to do this, and it is usually in response to seeing a distinction of some sort- something that doesn't transition smoothly. All you have to do is look at it in a way that will reveal to you how you can blend it together, but in order to arrive at this solution you should look creatively at the space between the sides you've identified. Imagine how it would look without those sides, and then make it happen. |
