Edit: I reckon this should be in support. Sorry for posting it in the wrong section, please move it :)
I made this: ![]() Using this as an reference: http://i129.photobucket.com/albums/p203/blackdragon_photo_bucket/Apple-2.png Could you please provide constructive criticism? What I already know: -The shadows are off. -The leaf doesn't look good. -The sun is supposed to be there, I used it as an reference to have a 'consequent' (yeah right) shadow. I just couldn't really be bothered to edit it out. Thanks in advance :) Edited by Chosen - 21 September 2011 at 9:25am |

The shape is off. Try checking out some apple photos from google.
See how your reference didn't use different tones in same size, unlike you did. It disturbs the eye and it's not realistic. And the shading is off in terms of shape, yes. Your highlight is much smaller than it's supposed to be. |

Will keep this in mind the next time, I'm probably going to try it again in a few hours. |

I made a new one!
![]() The shape's still a bit off, need to practice drawing outlines... I'll draw some basic isometric stuff and 'doodles' so I can practice on that. Also, I fixed the shadows a bit and used shaded outlines. I think it looks a lot better now :) |

The color ramp is too sudden, try a little dithering. Also, the black border looks bad in my opinion.

that's not how 'color ramp' should be used. color ramp is a range of colors in a palette arranged according to hue and lightness.
Personally I don't think the value-jumps are that jarring, and probably wouldn't add dithering (especially given the smooth surface of an apple. usually the edge won't be the darkest part of the object, as there will be a slight highlight there from light that bounces off of the surface that the object is sitting on. example in this tutorial by arne. if you're going to use a reference, don't use existing pixel art, use a photograph of an actual apple. I do not really understand. Then how should I make color palettes? I just don't know. Can someone explain me or link me to a tutorial that explains how?
Edit: Never mind. I saw you were talking to that other guy. Edited by Chosen - 23 September 2011 at 7:00am |
