i think a sky gradient is typically horizontal, rather than circling the sun. my other crits are mostly on the unfinished parts- make sure to blend the layers of grass with some grass texture 'dithering', tree might could use some smaller areas of leaves/branches so it doesn't look too dr. seuss-y.

Sorry for not posting during the week, but it looks like I'll be only able to pixel during the weekend.
Anyways regarding the tree It got revamped, about the sky you're right about the horizontal gradient though the position of the sun makes the surroundings of it look brighter, what I intentionally was planning to do was have both the horizontal and circular gradient overlap, but I ended up with a "tradeoff" between both, still a lot to do, especially on the color departement, well here is where the piece is currently standing. ![]() |

very interesting. One thing I dislike about your current version is how the top bush of the tree covers the mountain. The dithering/shading on the bark is totally awesome.
Maybe lose the upper bush, and places the second highest one slightly higher and a tad to the left? And perhaps put the old version back up again (next to the new one). It would help others give feedback on what doesn't work in your new version etc. Edited by Frost Butt - 13 November 2011 at 1:10pm |

looks like a large explosion is occurring on the other side of the mountain.

@Frost Butt :
The sole reason why I decided to keep the upper brush was that my first thought after pixeling it was "it doesnt belong here". All the previous versions are in the progress gif. @cure: Yep, it sure does. Current status: ![]() EDIT : Im gonna go ahead and call this one "finished". ![]() Topic closed. EDIT: Topic reopened ![]() I know now where I wanna head with this piece, starting out in greyscale. Any thoughts are welcome especially if regarding perspective/composition EDIT: I couldnt continue working in greyscale, tried shading the piece ![]() Edited by Dragonwarrior0 - 04 December 2011 at 10:38am |

Looks good =)
Composition: the tree and mountain use about the same amount of space, they divide the image by the middle. You might give more importance to the tree by moving the whole a bit to the right, that would give the tree more 'breathing space' on the left side too. Shadow perspective is wrong: ref 1, 2. |

Thx, worked on the shadow, moved the tree to the right and attempted texturing the tree and the sky.

Better ;)
Except the sky. While I like this particular pattern, it doesn't fit at all here, because 1- it steals all the attention from the tree and 2- it doesn't have a particular meaning relating to sky. You'd want something peaceful in this warm summer evening sky. Possibly some cloud wisps. The area close to the sun might be a bit more busy, but not the whole sky. Sky gradients are difficult anyway, I've never seen a really satisfying way out with a limited palette. My own solution is to exceptionally skip color conservation, like I did in this small piece: ![]() ps: Do you link the image to Imageshack yourself, or is it automatic? 'coz it interferes with the click-to-zoom function. There are nicer hosts than Imageshack ;) Edited by Manupix - 18 December 2011 at 12:22pm |

As much as I like this pattern I gotta agree with your first point, as for your second point I was attempting to depict an abstracted form of light realized via particels emitting/reflecting light. Pretty neat 32px piece you go there, it has a nice mood to it, though I'm trying to depict the morning with the sun barely up not the evening, as for your suggested solution for the sky gradient,Im not really fond of the idea to add tons of colors for one area of the pic, my lazyness permitts new colors only if absolutly necessary or if they have multiple uses.
After trying numerous other pattterns that I either didnt like or ended up being to distracting, I decided to tone down the attention given to the sky drastically, I like the feel this one has, so I think I'm gonna keep it for now and focus on the grass/mountain textures. ![]() Edited by Dragonwarrior0 - 02 January 2012 at 11:43am |
