![]() Topic: Tiles using NES Palette (WIP)Posted: 16 February 2012 at 12:00pm |

Hey,
I've been working on this tile set and was hoping for some help/ideas. My last tile based gallery entry didn't get much of a response from the PJ community, which is fine, I probably rushed it before I could really polish it or allow it to grow. With that said, I wanted to get some C + C before submitting this. I will also use this thread as a public repository. Right now I am running our of ideas for more assets to add to this mockup. As it is, it seems a little too repetitive. I'm am thinking about adding some underground buildings but I am unsure of the direction I am going. Mining? Underground lab? As mentioned in the title, I am using the nes palette but I am not going to restrict my self to colors per scan line or by 8x8 tile. I just looking for something with a nes feel. The first thing someone might point out is the dinosaur looks like it only has one arm. I am struggling with this because the size of a dinosaur arm is so small compared to the body. Maybe if I stick it out in an attack pose. Another thing I am unsure about is the dark background tiles. Are they too busy/noisy? Will sprites be able to "read" over them? Anyway, I look forward to reading any responses. ![]() I guess I need a character as well Edited by shampoop - 16 February 2012 at 12:11pm |

I do beleive it feels a bit repeditive. The dark brown wall looks very "looped". But the main issue (imo) is things dont make sense. Why is there a random purple grate in the center of the picture? Whats the deal with the blue boxes on the bottem right? What is that gold brick under the topleft-most ledge? Everything seems random.
I also suggest retricting, just a little bit. Keep a yellow pallet, a blue pallet, and a dark brown pallet. It might help you stay a little more organised, and things won't get lost in the picture.

Fore and background are fighting for attention. Try making the back less detailed, e.g.

Thanks for taking the time to show me that Jeremy. I started with the red and thought it looked cool but when I tried to draw on top of it I realizing I had made a mistake. I noticed you used the dark purple for the foreground rock cracks instead of the dark brown. I still need to decide which I like better. Anyway, I toke your advice for the reduced background and came up with this.
Now my goal is to use more of the nes palette. With the background reduced, I can add some other things like water in the cracks as well as completely underwater areas. Also, I might expand this to the outdoors if I can think of a way to make the transition. |
