![]() Topic: Bad Hair DayPosted: 14 April 2012 at 5:09pm |

Every day's a bad hair day for me. Does anyone have any tips or techniques for how best to pixel hair? I tried starting with the darkest color and working up to the lightest but it looks like an uncontrolled mess :(

An update after not having much time to work on pixels this week. I realised the answer to my question was to think more about how the hair falls before jumping in and trying to do strands. I'm still in two minds about whether the dithering helps or whether to just throw in more colors.

she's got bulldog jaw. would you mind posting the reference, would help us critique the likeness. Don't worry about individual strands, that can be implied with texture. probably best to focus more on the more general "clumps", then go in and refine those. the dithering isn't necessary.

Bulldog jaw sounds bad :O Too angular?
I don't actually have a ref because I managed to delete it from my phone, so I was doing what I could from what I pixelled before. The ref was hugely blurry so I probably got the form wrong. I think I'll try hair with a clearer reference. I found a few pencil tutorials that look promising. Edited by beef_x - 21 April 2012 at 4:27pm |

her jaw is protruding foreward too much. Heres a really quick edit, its not perfect so you should probably try finding a new ref.
![]() I also noticed that if her eyes are angeling downward, then the mouth is out of perspective (the lips should angle downward too then) |

chin is again protruding. check facial proportions - ref has pointy chin, face is about twice the height of the forehead, etc. Edited by Jeremy - 24 April 2012 at 3:31am |

![]() Thanks Jeremy, I started again. Not sure that the proportions/features are *right* but they're definitely better. I've been tinkering away on this in spare time but not getting anywhere fast. |
