Pixel Joint Forum: Is it "legal" use this technique?

First of all, sorry for my poor level of english, I can understand very well but I express very bad . 

The question is: Is it "legal" use this technique to "Pixel Art"?

1 - I've took a real photo,

2 - I've "posterized" it (I don't know if this tool is correctly expressed) and reduced its colours. Now I have a hue that I know it works properly. Well, I've changed the colours to other similar...

3 - I've modified the photo and then I've drawn an approximated shape. 

4 - The next step is an usual pixel art technique, colour it like the model picture, lights, adding dither, etc. But I do it from "0", I'm trying to do it like a drawing, not like a real object. 

What do you think??

	This sort of thing seems fine - it's essentially giving the same effect as tracing does but in a more roundabout way. It's always good to be open about your process too. I wouldn't call the posterised palette an example of a "good" palette though, if that's what you meant.

	It is legal, but I don't know if it helps you much. I always find it's easier to do things from scratch in my non-pixel-art, because photos are never exactly what you need.

	Thanks! Well, in this case the palette is horrible (I've already change it...) But in some cases are great, for example in photos of real clouds. Anyway, this way helps me to define how I must put dithering and draw the main shape.

	try texture rather than straight dither. Original photo has some pretty nice scales along the body.

	It's alright but you're kind of cheating yourself there. It's like if you were to draw a portrait, but you've already had the image traced in pencil and all you had to do was colour it in. I'm not saying it's any less credible but you won't get that same satisfaction as doing it from scratch.

	It's ok I guess, but be aware that it might trick you into some "mistakes" you would'nt make in drawing. For example, although they are technically right, the antenna really stick out completely straight and may lack character. Don't forget to twist you references to add character ; to make them yours.
