CHALLENGE: Stock Characters - Part 2

Hello, welcome to the second stock character challenge (here's the first).

For this challenge, you need to create a stylised portrait of a stock character - the more stylised the better. It should be obvious which stock character you've picked.

Pick one of the stock characters from the list below:

  • Ninja
  • Wizard
  • Evil robot
  • Vampire

You must create your own original interpretation of the stock character. So; for example, if you were to pick the wizard, you couldn't just pixel Harry Potter.

Canvas Size - Exactly 90 x 90.
Colours - Exactly 12.
Transparency - No.
Animation - No.

CHALLENGE RULES

  • Participants have until this upcoming Sunday at midnight (12AM Pacific) to submit their entry (strict). Don't forget to check the 'Submit to weekly challenge' checkbox.
  • Only new pixels allowed.
  • Open to all members.
  • Posting WIPs in this thread or in new threads in the WIP section is highly encouraged, but ONLY SUBMIT YOUR FINAL ART.

CHALLENGE JUDGING

  • Every Sunday at midnight (12AM Pacific) the previous week's entries are judged.
  • Every week a new voting poll will be posted for previous week's entries.
  • Winner announced the following week.

CHALLENGE PRIZES/GOODIES

  • Top three finishers will receive an award displayed in your PJ gallery profile for all to see and envy.
  • Top finisher gets to call the following week's challenge...sweet.
  • 'Participation' ribbons will be given for all who enter.
  • No matter what happens you get challenged :)

CHALLENGE VOTING

Vote now for your favorite pixelart in this week's challenge!

CHALLENGE AWARDS

The Stock Characters - Part 2 pixel art challenge is complete and we have three new champions. This week's challenge awards go to the following pieces:

Thanks so much to all who took the time to vote and participate in the challenge!

Doesn't quite tickle my fancy, unlikely I'm going to participate.  Best of luck to those that do!  Looking forward to some creative entries.

Bloody hell, you don't hang about do you. Very nice. My only criticism is that maybe too much of that amazing hat and not enough face. Nonetheless, amazing WIP.

Very nice Reo, but it looks like your wizard is caught in the canvas, maybe cut the hat rather then the beard and add an item that goes outside the canvas.

I chose to draw the wizard and loosely base it off Peter Jackson's interpretation of Gandalf. Obviously, this is still a work-in-progress.

My wip, I figured I'd do a young female wizard, to oppose all the old grumpy wizards upcoming.

EDIT:

I'm pretty much stuck on the body, I hate the shading there but I have no idea how to do it better.

Here's a very early WIP! Right now I'm mainly just trying to work out all the shapes

He's going to be an old evil robot that's Now living in the 21st century!

Any critic is greatly appreciated!

The rules say "pick one of the options below", I don't think we should take them that strictly however.

About my wip:

I'm quite happy with the shading on the body now.

I know what the rules say, it's just nitpicking in my opinion to disqualify someone for something like that.

EDIT:

if you are that offended by my submission, then decide for yourself which it is. its not like the characters are going to be separated by type, and then voted on.

this is an artistic forum, where i assumed artistic expression prevailed. so enough with the public execution, submit a piece or move on. the admins will punish me accordingly if this is an issue.

I like your submission a lot..Just a couple of ideas, maybe this will help.

- I added a couple of bats to the picture. (by the way, your moon looks awesome!)

- tweaked the cats eye balls, to give him more of that creepy/magical kind of black cat look. :p

- i couldn't quite figure out what the cat was sitting on, it sort of looked like a hill. so just put him on a fence.

-- i continued the stars till the horizon, i think it fills the sky this way. it just seemed a little empty right around the middle of the image.

I like your edits, however, they make it less portraitish in my opinion.
And the challenge says that you have to make a portrait.

I'm a bit in doubt now ._.

Here's an update, decided to lose the shirt, added more detail and tweaked the color a bit. Now just working on finishing it up! Also need to think of a background

EDIT:

I'm calling it done! unless anyone else has suggestions/critic!

@Gogglecrab, I think that a bit more contrast between shades would do your piece wonders, for one thing. Can't confirm this with an edit right now (on the iDevice) but perhaps make the highlights a bit brighter and the shadows a bit darker? Also, hue shifting more away from orangey colors in the shadows would add more interestingness (if that's a word) to it.

Might finish both. Need to add some colors to the robot. I know the Vamp needs work. Wanted a 13th color for the Vamp background but will have to use one of those 12.

Started inking my ninja, but I noticed that most of the portraits are head-and-shoulders busts, did I screw up? should I try to make it bigger and just focused on the face, or you think this is fine?

Edit: a bit closer

@FlyGuy: Haha, was thinking the same thing. Anyone can just pick which one you drew. By being a vampire, you don't stop being a wizard.
A Robot would be trickier tho, maybe if he was a cyborg.

@a3um: Wow dude! that's amazing!
His mask thing looks like bandages tho, something a mummy would wear, maybe if they were just a bit darker?

@gogglecrab: Man, I can't spot the difference, real subtle!
But yeah, after staring for a while, i think it's way better.

Here is my WIP entry of the Robot, could use some crits...it's not quite how I want it. I'm going for a rustic desert sunset kind of vibe.

Update
ONO, I just realized I already picked my palette but I don't have anything planned for the background.

@ionosphere: Cool! I like the overall style. I wasn't sure about the bottom part, is that supposed to be detail on his shoulders or tiny robot spider legs?

@iono, I think the head is too round/organic to read as a robot. I like the direction you're going with the colors, though.

Finished:

(Text on the kanji means: Reserved Seat Ticket :p )

I think it does count as a portrait, it's kind of tricky to have a portrait of a ninja because they look silly just standing there blankly. I'm going to submit this, even tho it's clear a3um will win!

I particularly liked Christoballs entry:

I'd like to ask the mods why mine was removed from the contest entry? If it's that big of an issue trying to figure out which of the character type I decided on..I picked the wizard. Maybe I over "stylized" it?

Don't try to mislead. If you make it clearly a wizard instead of some techno-pirate I'll be happy to put it back in.

@Dredlockz: I guess... they're both kind of iffy imo but full-body portraits are a thing I guess.

Copied from an older post:
Its really embarrassing that this is becoming such a big issue. It seems to be out of spite. I am well within the guidelines of this competition, and in my interpretation of a wizard there just so happens to be aspects that appear similar to the other characters..Was this intentional, of course, I wont lie..But does this automatically NOT make it a wizard? Point out the issues that you feel do not make it a "stylized" wizard, and I'll be happy to explain what they are..

Fangs you ask? Of course not! Thats merely saliva, this evil wizard has just lost his mind and is drooling.

Mechanical and electronic components? - Why yes, thats right! This wizard is either from a distant future, or a steam punk alternate reality. Completely normal. :p

Sword? And when can a wizard not defend himself? I vaguely remember Gandalf taking an elvan sword from a troll encampment named Foe-Hammer. As well as Throin the Dwarf taking a sword named Ocrist.

I have altered a couple pixels if it makes you feel any better. That way we can say it went back to the drawing board. But in the end, isn't it really what I say it is?
