I was inspired by the excellent game Brogue and this tileset to program my own tactical "roguelike" game for tablets. Although I've been busy lately, I still add to it every now and then. I would appreciate crits - palette suggestions in particular, as I have trouble with colour. Also, input on creating textured tiles and environments, but still maintaining distinct sprites at such a low resolution :/

Below is a mockup, as well as the palette I kinda sorta work from. Edits, or even contributions to the monster pile are welcomed!

It's quite an awesome set, the animations really help characterize them. The colors look great to me, they remind me of Reprisal (the Populous-like).
Since your characters are extremely low-res and use a very large range of colors (I mean, they go from black bat to white sheep), you'll have to be careful with the background, though the animations will help. If you do get a readability issue, remember that you can use less saturated colors in backgrounds, in order to make the sprites stand out.

I love these! Totally charming. Sorry I don't have any critique, I'm just real excited for the game now :)

yrizou: Yeah, I think I'm going to have to really finalize the palette - a more subdued one for the tiles and environment, and another brighter one for men and monsters to keep them from melding into the background.

MrHai: I'm not actively programming at the moment, but soon! for Android tablets.

ADrawingMan : Thank capcom! Whenever I need a colour, I head straight to SFA3. Does a full SFA3 palette exist?

I like em, but each humanoid's animation kinda looks funny if their arms only bounces upwards and not downwards.

Messed around tonight and made an adorable lil rhino. No clue how well this might animate, but here's 3 frames. My version of PS doesn't really do gif animation so I've just been flipping layers. Used same palette.

Feel free to use this as you like. Maybe will make more sometime if burned out on other stuff.

Uploaded them here but maybe I should have sized them larger?

edit: your background looks less blue than mine, maybe I used wrong color mode or something?

Hi Iscalio,

Here's your animated lil' Rhino at his original size. I've always used a program on Windows called Graphics Gale for all pixeling, which is how I animated him. All the characters are 16x16 with 3 frames @ 10/60 frames per second.

If you were keen on working on lil' rhino, there would be a couple things I could suggest. Firstly, all the characters bounce! It adds expression at such a low resolution. I would also try an animated tail flip and an ear flap.

Also, I would try adding skin folds to his body to see how it looked. If you google a rhino, they have weird skin folds. And perhaps a different color for the horn, to differentiate it from his head. But it is a good start!
