I voted no. I don't have a tablet, although would love one. Mainly for digital art other than pixel art though, of which i'd probably stick to the mouse anyway.

I think a tablet is great for digital art. Not really for pixel art, but I use the tablet to easily sketch out what I want to pixel if it's big enough sometimes. I like the tablet for things like open canvas, painter, ps etc. IMO I get more control out of it

tablets are great for anything brushy, like opencanvas and photoshop stuff, and for sketching out pixelart, but for detailing etc pixels i still use mouse. i like the way it works like a pen, and i got accostomed really easy to it. i lost my mouse skills though. i used to be better on a mouse then some really great srtists i know on a tablet. but i dont néed the skills anymore so its fine. i got a cheap one by the way, cost me 15 bucks.i can reccomend buying one to people, just a cheap one. you don't have to go for wacom immediately. just a 50 buck one or something will seriously boost CG skills and speed. (well.. that is, if you can handle a pencil fairly well ofcourse) |

I'm exactly the same as PB. I was given a tablet for my birthday a couple of years ago, but I've it's pretty useless for my pixel art and I'm only just getting into other forms of digital art. Although I love hand drawing, my skills with the mouse beat a digital pen, which most people seem to find strange when I tell them.

Nah, I don't have a tablet. I don't think it really improves pixel art, personally. Unless you're doing large pieces.

I've got a tablet hooked up on my PC... it's actually my sister's tablet, but it didn't work on her PC somehow.
I really want to like the thing and I try to use it as much as possible, but I just have a really hard time making something good with it. I've been using a mouse for so long that I can draw better with that than with a tablet. For pixel art I've always used a mouse. |

I resently upgraded to a wacom tablet, sooo much better than the cheaper ones if you -do- you your tablet a lot. Though, as Snader said, buying a cheap one, to see if you'd actually get any use out of first, is deffinatly a good idea.
I tend not to use it to pixel though (main reason being the awkard size more than anything, for very precise movements), sketching pixels yes, drawing/painting/doodling very much so but actual pixeling, not generally. Edited by Weasel - 22 July 2006 at 3:49am |

I don't have a tablet, but would really like one for digital art other
than pixel art. Re-outlining a drawing on the computer works wonders
for the quality of the picture, and I just can't do it with the mouse
(though I can oekaki with it. :B)

Crazy skills :D Then again I believe Ian Mclean said he uses tablet a lot... I guess it's just a matter of taste
I use my tablet not so often for pixels recently... I actually get more tired when pixeling with a tablet... it rocks for illustrations tho :D

how do you get exactly what you want with just tablet lines? I do find that you get more control, but not THAT much control. That's why I only use it for sketching and anything else.

I almost exclusively use a tablet for pixeling. I can work with a mouse no problem, but I find that the tablet is more precise and quicker.

I bought a Graphire like...three or four weeks ago. I love it. It was
the cheapest I could find though, because I didn't wan't to waste money
on something I didn't even know if I would like to use. Sucks for
pixeling though. Especially for dithering. But it was great improvement
from my trackpad :D

I have a wacom tablet but I just use it for the mouse. I should sell it cause I do more coding than digital art. I also prefer the mouse when pixeling.

Yay, I got my tablet today.
It's a Wacom, and it's pretty neat, really great for drawing, adn blocking out colors, not so great for dithering, but thats expected. It also came packaged with Photoshop elements and corel paint so that makes me happy... Hopefully I can submit my first tablet piece soon. |

I use a tablet almost exclusively for any art I do. I'm new to pixel art so I'm certainly not fast but overall the tablet cuts down on the strain on my wrist that using a mouse typically puts on it...especially with all the fiddling pixel art needs.
If I could figure out how to comfortably use my tablet for WoW I'd do that, too. WoW mousing is a horrible wrist-killer for me. x___x |

I've been saving up for a WACOM tablet for ages.
I can wield a mouse with some precission, but sometimes the *click**click**click* is enough to get my blood pressure going.
That.
And doing CG work and my hand slips, all of a sudden I have this lovely paint smeer across the entire piccy. *Mufufu*
(Nothing that CTRL-Z can't fix, but it takes o.2 sec. out of my painting time! Arg. I won't stand for it.)
Tablet for CG. Mouse for pixels. Or maybe it would work better, I dunno yet. :D

DID program my stylus for its 512 levels of pressure sensitivity.
WILL continue to use it, even though, especially for the moment, it is not nearly as efficient as my mousework.
I could do with a steadier pencilhand. Who knows, maybe it'll even make my pennmanship legible, over time.
I fricking love it, though. Beautiful, beautiful little piece of plastic. And metal, I think.
(Updates and product/practicalness criticism)
I still love my tablet. It's fun, and I'm using it for all kinds of things I could do better with the mouse, merely because I can. As I've mentioned a few bazillion times, I got the Graphire4 4by5 tablet, and I honestly can't complain about the size. It works for me, and I don't think any larger would really be that much better.
It does and will take some getting used to, though. I find it incredibly hard to draw a straight line using the pencil tool. Also, pressing the button on the pen (which should simulate a right click) causes the tip of the pen to move, sometimes making me select a colour I did not want to (Graphicsgale, right-click = eyedropper).
The absolute positioning is also taking time to work with. It should be handy once I get a handle on it, but at the moment I find myself doing all kinds of mouse tricks with the stylus, and making myself look like a fool in the process. For the record, absolute positioning means you can put your pen on the top-right corner of your pad, and it will show on the top-right corner of your screen. Mouses use relative positioning, which move the cursor relative to its current location.
For the moment, the wacom is a pretty addition to my computer desk, though not immediately efficient. It set me back 85 bucks for the tablet itself, 40 for shipping, and then another 42 for duties, 'cause I shipped across the border. I consider it wholely worth it, and reccomend one to any pixel artists out there who are thinkin' about getting one.
I'd imagine it would be vastly more useful for other digital arts, but I really don't do any of those, so I cannot vouch. Gaming with tablets is fun. I kinda wanna get an FPS just to see if there are any crazy advantages to having a tablet for it. I don't think there would be, but you neever know. |

Change is good, in my opinion, and I'm all for this change. YES. I actually initially liked it for how easy it made UI navigation.. Absolute positioning is a lot more sensible for UI navigation. |

Jajajaja!!!
I started pixel art with the mouse but got Repetitive Strain Injury from doing it, so I bought myself a small WACOM one. I would stop pixel art if I didn't have access to a tablet now :) It's also very useful whenever I come up with a concept: I don't have to draw it on paper and go through that hassle of scanning it...
