Hello All,
If somebody could give me some tips in applying a shadow to my stone I will be gratefull. The light source is on the righthand side and the sprite will be used in a game with other objects in it. At the moment the style of the sprites are in outline form. I maybe ditch that style but for the moment it is in this manner. At first I started out to have a hole at the lefthand side. I think I have corrected that, but still I don't like the shadow part. Not sure if it is the colors I've been trying or that the general direction is wrong. Thanks in advance for your help. ![]() Edit: Trying to incorporate the advices from Jalonso: ![]() Current last: ![]() Don't you think it is falling? We don't know what is behind :) Best regards from M.E. Edited by M.E. - 02 March 2007 at 10:28am |

I think the coloring looks pretty good overall. Rocks always tend to look best the less you put in them, I find. The only real crit here is the lineart. The top area is very jagged in a pixelart nitpicking sort of way. As opposed to rock jaggy. The two sides however being so straight is visually unappealling and rather unrealistic. It may also help if you highlight using greens, as in moss green. The colors are basic greys which is always boring to the eyes. Undertone the greys with browns maybe.

Hello Jalonso,
Thank you very much for your help. I will work on the moss and the less is more rule :) The top will be looked at as well. The sides are straight because it is pushed against to and therefore should move in the game. But I will see if I can play with it to get it less straight. Kind regards from M.E. |

Well, I'm still not very satisfied with the stone. I tried to work with different colors.
At the moment I have attempted a brown version
![]() Which is looking like a patato
![]() And a blue-ish attempt:
![]() Which looks like candy and / or winterscene rock.
I need a summer/spring and possibly even a autumn
rock. But winter isn't in the game just yet!
From the advice of Jalonso I think I'm doing the
shadow better. But maybe it still needs work?!
Thanks in advance for your suggestions!
Best regards from
M.E.

The blueish version has the best sense of weight, lighting and pixelling. For the various seasons just the color of the lightsource (sun, I guess) is probably enough. I suppose this is dependent on the BG/scene itself.
I find the reworked edges work way better now. They are still pushable, yet more realistic. On the grey version, the moss is not bad but the lightest tone seems over saturated. I would think a blue-hued moss would help the moss blend best with the grey based rock tones, without having to go all AA, lol. The potato has good colors but the actual texture of the rock is not as cool as the blue one. |

Hello,
Taken the blueish version as a template I have reworked
the grey version. I ditched the moss on the highlighted
side. And toned down the greens on the darkside.
I tried using darks that 'come to you' instead of darkshades
that create a hole. I think it works.
![]() There is enough happening in the dark but I don't think it
is annoying or irritating the viewer.
If you have a different opinion please let me know.
Best regards from
