outlines look good but, I think it's time to throw some colour action in there. It's really hard to comment without seeing a sense of form being developed. It looks interesting so far though

Very nice feel to this. You should impliment a GUI even if it is only a single line typing area.

I am sorry, there will be no color for some more time, still working on the line-art.

Mmm, originally this was not planned as a game mock-up, but I must say, I like your idea of adding a GUI in MI2 or STS style to make it look like a screen from a classic adventure game.
I haven't yet decided whether I'll do that or not (leaning more towards not doing that, as I think it would add unnecessary empty areas to the piece (the canvas won't stay as big as it is now, it will probably get cut below the dwarfs feet)).

Ah my mistake, I just assumed that it was a game screen since I've been looking at dungeon crawlers and point and clicks for a while now.

Hi Dennis,

Looking good so far!
What would be nice is if you could make the dwarf
sad. Maybe bent his head?  Curle up the arms.
Try to avoid mirror image (=left and right side of the figure
are the same!)

Looking forward to your updates!

Best regards from

It is a nice idea, I'm still discussing with myself whether I'll do it.

M.E.
Thanks for your thoughts.
I did change the dwarf, so that it is not simply mirrored anymore (rotated his left arm a bit, slightly tilted the head and changed the legs and feet).

I will not make him appear sad though (he is of course sad but...) as the dominant feeling he currently has is that he is angry and pissed that he is not allowed to go into this tavern to have a(who are we kidding here, it's a dwarf, he would have quite a few) beer(s) and he's giving an angry/pissed glare at the gnome that is laughing at him.
(The gnome isn't yet in there, so his glare is currently going into the void.)

Ah Dennis,

At least you gave him a propper expression now.
The angry is dripping of his face!
Good job!
Its comming along nicely, the details are funny!
Is it water that is near the sidewalk? It looks
a bit like it where the lines go towards the fence
where a scared somebody is watching.

*Watches eagerly for updates*

Thank you M.E. for all your nice words.

The lines near the sewer gate are not meant to define water, they're supposed to be a reminder for myself that the road must have a gentle little "valley/dent"(is that even the right word here) there, because otherwise it would not be possible to see that much of the gate (it would be covered by sand).

The line-art is finished now. I'll let it rest for a few days and then I'll revisit it to make some adjustments (will change whatever I'll see that looks odd to me when I'm reviewing it with fresh eyes).
Meanwhile, I'll plan the colors.

edit:
Almost forgot:
Originally I planned to have the gnome point at the dwarf and laugh but I thought to myself that gnomes are more evil than that, so I made him give the dwarf the finger.
(The gnome is a little drunk too, so he's even more likely to be evil and courageous enough to do that gesture in front of an already pissed dwarf.)

I know I'm slow, just wanted to apologize to everyone who is waiting (I can tell by the number of views that some people are interested in seeing this finished :P) that it will still take some time (I estimate about two to three weeks)... feel free to share your thoughts on what is there so far.

Hi Dennis,

This is comming along nicely!
Watch out for the helmet of the dwarf it blends into
the background! The grey of the stones and the grey
on the helmet make the helmet look like a rock.

*watches as the rest unfolds*

Thank you for pointing that out M.E., I have for now separated the dwarf more from the background by giving an outline to parts of the helmet. I hope I'll find a way later though that will not involve any outlines.

Even though your image does not imply an early era restricted palette, I still love the use of gray in the image.

Very unique feel to this-keep going!

Thank you for the encouragement, Pixel_Outlaw.

Not sure, what you mean by "image does not imply an early era restricted palette".

What color depth are you using? I had assumed 256 color or greater.

If you have 256 colors you can usually get away with not using gray but in very low color depths you become forced to use gray sometimes.

I was just saying it is nice to see gray as a midtone color sometimes, even in high color depths.

I'm using 16 distinct colors picked from a 24bit color-space (8 bits per each component of Red, Green and Blue).

My reason to use gray tones is that with a limited color count like that, gray fits nicely in so many places.

Any last thoughts, kicks in the butt, critique before I go and pollute my gallery with it?

(I won't have time to work on it for the next few days... which is good, because my eyes need a break from this.)

edit: Submitted to gallery already.
