A quick, anal-retentive question: It says "an Easter Island Statue"- I assume I can do more than one?

Anyway, quick sketch:

Dithering is meant to give an IMPRESSION of there being edditional colours based on a swapping pattern, i mean, when you have black, white, and a chessboardish pattern in the middle of them , you will have black, and white, but it deels like black, white and grey. what happened to my dithering is that is donīt give the impression... it TURNED INTO BEING THE MIDDLE TONE... And thatīs weird ._. bucause i uploaded an image with the proper palette.

Colours - Max 16. use only colours from this palette-

when it says MAX. it means you can use up to XX colors.
when it says MIN. you have to use at least XX colors.
When it doesnt says anything, it means its up to you to use as many as you need("as you need" is not the same as "as you can/want". remember you have to watch over the #colors you're using.)
---
on the dithering issue, your colors are right, there are no "extra tones"(unless I asume you saved a GIF image with a limited support of colors or a standard palette, wich gave you undesired colors).
Dithering is a technique based on an optical ilusion, wich is based on one of the laws of perception(proximity). your eyes can't percieve the small diferences between each dot of color, and interprets it as a single tone. the bigger the area of each color they are, the better your brain can decode the image and the easier will be to identify the boundaries of each color. same reason why diferent patterns of dithering will result in the idea of diferent tones, hence the reason why using more than the simple checkboard pattern is encouraged in order to get more than a middle tone and to wider your posibilities, and even the point of not limiting yourself to a pattern-esque dither gives you more color choices and more results. aswell(check exocet's work). dithering is more than checkboard pattern. and its never, ever nevecasry under some certain, specific cases.

oh, and in your particular piece, i doubt you really need it at all. but it seems that you fooled yourself with your own dithering. either check your monitor or your own eyes.

unfair? whats the unfair part of that? the idea is to portrait a/the Moais using that palette. how you actually do portrait it comes out of your side. I encourage anybody to not limit it to a simple scenary pic showing a moai head in a island.you can plays as much as you want(or can) with the concept. and the more original* the entry, the more it gets voted.

*in either concept or technique development.

EDIT: Oh, and by the way, the challenge says to depict an Easter Island statue, not sure what the ruling'd be on the non-statue ones

Hmm, I like the idea alot. But the clouds bother me. If you are above the island why do you see their sides? Also too much dithering imo, and I think it would look better without that swirl thing and more of a plain view of the ocean with clouds moving. Or maybe it starts with the clouds obscuring the view and then they move out of the way as you zoom in. Just my thoughts

pay attention ty what you're doing neru. quantity usualyl doesnt beat quality.

inother words, doing a massive copy paste, specially when every object should be shaded individually instead of industrially, tends to ruin a piece. take your time, do it slowly but steady, and when you feel like lacking the knowledge, study and do your research. you'll find yourself doing a much satisfactory piece. you don't even have to bother yourself with the challenge's deadline. remember to do it for your own amusement, not as a duty.
