Just wondering what others see...
I'm working on my winter PJ avvy for this year and can't tell how
obvious my scarab is in this. Is the second arm even needed (in the middle image)? Does it
look too wierd? BG or no BG? If you saw this alone would you even see
my scarab at all?

The scarab is very hard to notice.
Right now it looks like a snowman with a scarf in the wind.
Not sure how you would fix it though, sorry.
Perhaps you could make a scarab snow-angel?

All things posted by me are simply my opinion mixed with experience, I will make no claim to the otherwise~
I am most used to working with sprite outlines.

I sort of see the scarab since you pointed it out, but I never would have if you hadn't.

I agree with hatch here.
Maybe you could change something on his bottom. Not sure why though. Maybe a hole in the snow or something. :/

Any reason you can't just make the scarab body itself out of snow, jam some sticks in it for legs, and give it a pipe/coal?
EDIT: Maybe have it it face up rather than your usual face down

I think the snowman is awesome - well pixelled and full of character. The background is very supporting of the image, and the corner tabs definitely give it the look of a season's-greetings card/photo. And the animated snow is the cherry on top.
Sorry, the scarab shape doesn't read unless you know to look. I'm assuming you're not going for a hidden picture contest, so how about trying something like giving the snowman two sets of stick arms? (it sounded cool and exciting at first thought, and it's never been done before, but I admit I don't know if it'd be awesome or weird unless I saw it first!)
Thanks!

Why not just give him another pair of threads-hands (like Ninja Crow said) instead of making an illusion? It will easily produce insect associations. But if you aim to draw just regular snowman - maybe put him into desert setting (oh, yeah, very regular)? Nevermind.

I think all the little sprigs coming off the twigs make them look more like roots. and slightly creepy, for some reason. diggin' it otherwise.
(don't forget his scarf)

I don't think the lower half of the scarf is necessary, considering you've already got an arm half-visible underneath it. I don't normally (Or at all?) see people wearing scarves with two... whatever you call 'ems flapping out behind them.
That aside, it looks quite nice! The two-frame animation looks a bit choppy in some places, but I don't know if you have any set restrictions.

Maybe replace the bottom legs with snow made legs. I just think there are too many limbs right now. It makes the scarab way too obvious and not subtle but noticable.
If you give it legs made of snow it will make it look less obvious but will keep the scarab visable.

the lower legs look sort of wierd. I had an idea, not sure how it would turn out exactly but you could try putting the snowman on the ground again and then for the lower legs have two objects in the forground that happen to appear to be placed where the legs would go. Not sure what type of objects you could use though.

You must keep the pipe! (smoke is optional)
- Sticks look better red and thinner
- Snow blinks on and off here, rather than falling
Sorry about that!

I think it has to be 2 frames since all the other animations in his avatar file are 2 frames?

Ya, I have a self imposed 2 frame limit. That was just thrown in. I'll fix the snow. I'll have to play around again soon.
If the branches go to the orange red ramp then I only have green and blue for the scarf and that didn't look good...yup strict color limit too.

Its not that I have a color limit. Its that I will only add a color when there is just no other option. Originally my scarab had 8 colors, current pallette is somewhere around 20.

Forgive me if this is a technical issue that I don't understand yet, J, but exactly why can't the scarf and the limbs both be reddish (done very successfully in the earliest shown version)? And earth tones are very seasonal anyway, right?
Uh...right?
Thanks.

I love it, I also loved the 1st one of Nov 9, deserves to live on its own (even without snowman). Mandragora root scarab? And I love the current turkey one best of all!
