hah that sounds dumb to me, either you guys didnt think this through or its an april fool's joke

If artists want their art to remain in their gallery, theyll have to repost them, and in that way will hog the weekly and monthly showcases instead, and will probably regain the votes they had anyhow!

But the idea of making the big showcase a yearly showcase instead is pretty good. Like not reset on every january first, but always showcasing pixel art since one year before, like today it would be april 2nd 2008 to april 2nd 2009. That would make sense and wouldnt take away anyone's art. Id also make it so that you can see the all-time top showcase still if you made a search for it, but id make the "hall of fame" show yearly results by default.

Also heh if its serious, april 1rst really is the worst day to post an announcement...

(thinking about it, april first is also the worst day to get into any freak accident)

The image represents the duality of birthday parties, the eternal struggle between unwrapping the presents or eating the cake first......................................................

Control is seen as a very important part of pixel art since the medium is about having control over the smallest visible unit of an image. Having 100+ colors in an image that looks like it has 32 looks like a lack of control from the author, so peoples' reactions are legitimate I think.
On the other hand. you can have complete control over your image without caring about the colors, so I also think you have every right to not give a fuck about color count. That picture doesn't look like it uses photoshop filters or blurs or whatever and looks clearly like pixel art., so no need to be anal about colors I think!

The lack of smoke is because its going to be as a separate sprite though, its a one-color smoke animation that ill use as "particles", with alpha blending and stuff, that I reuse for pretty much all blasts and smoke effects in the game.

The bottom of the blast gets wider because I thought its how it should behave as its expansion is blocked by the ground. The top part remains longer because its supposed to be the "core" of the blast, like a rising fireball from which the flames flow down. Maybe it would look more natural if more fire was shot up initially, it would break the triangular shape caused by the rising fireball.

Spelunky is some of the most fun I had in a long time, I highly recommend everyone to try it out. The replay value is fantastic.

The character is awesome, and so is the pic as a whole, but that background does look like something color reduced. It looks a lot like the result of an ice texture I made for a quick effect using color reduction. I don't think doing that is despicable by itself, it can save a lot of time, but it simply doesn't have its place on a gallery that demonstrate pixel art skill.

Yeah, its not the shading, but the black outline, I think I had removed the black outline by mistake in that frame when I made the gif to upload it here because of a flood fill tool, and forgot that part when putting it back or something. ill correct that.

Very nice, I like the style on this. Maybe it would be better if it wasn't in perfect symmetry though, but that might be what you wanted.

This looks really sweet! One thing I would have done differently though is, making the person seem like hes almost standing on his toes, to give the impression hes like almost falling forward, instead of just be standing like this. I'm not sure how to describe it, sorry! Maybe someone else sees what I mean and can put it into better words?

Eep, thats an odd decision, to tell gallery directors to stop sorting the galleries before the next system is actually put in place. They should have put some temporary replacement instead, like spread out the sorting work to a wider range of people, like official beta testers.
....Unless they want a large amount of "miscats" to build up before the next system arrives to test it or something..?

Well the idea is that there is a column of warm air in the middle that raises the smoke but also pushes it away from the center, and that the smoke falls off this "heat column" after being pushed on top then outward enough. The problem might be that the smoke all falls sort of together more or less at the same time instead of randomly.

For the animation's speed,  I don't see the problem though, it really looks fine to me! I'm pretty sure that any faster would make the smoke dissipate unrealistically fast. Maybe I should make the fireball part faster and the smoke part slower by adding frames to it.....?

There, a new version is up. Worked on the face, shading, added a black outline, removed some dithering.

Ah, now that's a useful crit! Thanks! I'm working on a second version right now. Also I am adding a black outline around the elements, I think it will look better over the mobile devices' desktop (the image is to be displayed over the desktop background, next to icons)

Can you be more specific? I don't see what you mean at all. Its certainly less detailed and has less of a scenery than my usual work, but how does it look raw?

This has got a lot of depth and texture, really awesome! I fear that in-game the sprite might look weird, because typically we imagine asteroids like that to always be spinning around randomly. It might feel awkwardly static when in-play (and the very tight shading would make a simple rotation look way weird too)
That still frame is really great though. And it might not be a problem if the enemy splitting it in two acts quickly and you dont actually see this image for too long moving around.

Personally id change the red of the walls a tad, its a little too flashy! Maybe make it like, a tad gray-er? Like add some blue there and there.  Experiment with the colors a bit!
