when you got an avatar that is the right size you have to click on the 3rd option you see underneath your work. (under the ratings) currently it say:

truth, amount of colors isn't really important anymore as long as the end result looks good, if the result looks good, who cares if you used 6 or 60 colors? But still I often see the comment "reduce the amount of colors" in the WIP section and on the comments of pieces in the gallery. Too many colors can hurt a piece, but when it doesn't why change it?

Using a red outline is not the right way to make the head stand out.
Here is an example of how it could look with a brown outline:

And if you don't like that then I suggest you try to use other ways to make it stand out. Try some stuff and post it in the WIP section so people can help you out.

This is pretty nice for your fist piece, you're making the same mistakes many people make who are new to this. Like color choices, especially for the outlines. Study some artwork in the gallery and ask for help on the forums and you'll be sure to improve!

It looks mirrored. you should make it so both sides look different. I agree with Jalonso on the outline, maybe you should try a very dark brown outline?

Hmm, I'm not going to vote yes or no for this one cause I don't know what is right. This just doesn't feel like pixel art to me, it is hard to believe this is mady purely by hand and if it is you can consider this as a compliment because you have some serious skills.
But to me it doesn't really matter if it is all done by hand or not, it just doesn't seem in the right place here. Maybe that is because this is a new and much more realistic style, maybe even a new style of pixel art (if it indeed is pixel art).
Don't get me wrong, I love this piece, but to me it seems to be better in place on DeviantART for example.

I always check before I click yes.
If the preview is a 1 minute work from somebody from level 1 with around 5 points I just click no. But if the preview looks bad, but I know the artists previous works are better I check it out to see why it is that bad.
