Sweet.

Only crits are that it seems a little monochromatic and too smooth; I mean that there is no beginning blast at the beginning but rather it "grows" from the center

Explosion smoke becomes a bit desaturated or darker before it dies. Still you have same bright pixels during all frames.

 If it is smoke try cahnge last few frames, and if it's explosion make it even slightly brighter at start and fade to the dark pixels at the end of animation.

whoops!...just looked at your planes a little closer, and they do look like side scroller shooters. Although it could use a lil' smoke, the explosion is technically correct. My mistake....sorry for the double post.

Looks great! Reminds me of the Metal slug explosions. I guess I only have a technical question to comment on. If this explosion is for your top-view planes, than wouldn't the explosion fade out on all directions, instead of up? I'm saying this because the explosion starts to grow, and expand in all, directions, giving it a birds eye view of an explosion, but in the end it evaporates upwards. I could understand this if it were an explosion for a side-scroller shoot-em up like metal slug, or contra....ehh, never mind, its pretty damn kick ass if you ask me, any ways....love to see more of your work. Great job!
