user
Ninja Crow (Level 3 Private Eye) at 6/3/2009 7:08:09 PM

So amazingly evocative!  I've never seen such an interesting way to separate foreground from background (either that or I'm playing the wrong games).  I love it.

user
BK! (Level 1 Intern) at 5/19/2009 8:54:51 PM

The distant buildings are done so well, it adds a lot of depth.

user
Levi (Level 1 Rookie) at 5/8/2009 10:12:22 PM

This is awesome.  What's a game clan in reference to pixel art?

I think I found the Easter egg. It's right next to the top-left corner of the bright foreground, right?

user

Something like Spiderman...
I can't wait for the full version, but for the meantime a five.

user
jalonso (Level 11 Godfather) at 6/3/2006 11:12:54 PM
@ Ensellitis, The game will now use the parallex effect you suggested, thanks.
@Big Brother, I wish I understood what you meant by the contrast.
@Those who didn't like the black, I have replaced with a dark blue/black and it does look better, thank you.

user
big brother (Level 11 Admiral) at 6/3/2006 9:11:34 AM

I like the background layers, but I think the foreground could use some more contrast. Right now, it doesn't really pop out at me, like a game field should.

user
Ensellitis (Level 11 Sensei) at 6/3/2006 3:43:39 AM
But what is the ISO easter egg??  I have strained my eyes looking for it!

user
jalonso (Level 11 Godfather) at 6/1/2006 9:43:02 PM
Thanks for the comments to all. The reason the front buidings stand out a little bit is because the other team members wanted the playable platforms to be clear for the player. The boxes on the roofs are there for access to the rooftops so they where needed. When the colors where better unified it was hard to determine which rooftops where playable so this is the compromise.
I was not understanding the black color comments made by some. Firefox, Safari, IE all display images slightly different which could account for this. I see it fine but will change it to a blue just shy of black to be safe. Thanks for pointing that out.

user
Faktablad (Level 6 SWAT) at 6/1/2006 9:08:01 PM
I really like this piece, especially the buildings in the far background.  However, the foreground buildings lack a certain something for me.  Perhaps it is the multitude of black outlines you used, idk.  I know they should be expected in a night scene, but somehow they make the scene look unfinished.  Also do what Stitchy said and try to unify the palette.  The scene looks more foreground than background right now, as Tomohashi said.  I really love the overall mood and lighting of the piece, though.

user
Tomohashi (Level 1 Rookie) at 6/1/2006 2:12:19 PM
That is a stunningly cool piece of art there. The only problems I find are...

1- This is the big one. If it's going to be a game level, then it's kinda distracting. You're gonna need some  bright characters, or lower the contrast between the blueish back and the fore. I would do this by adding some blue into all of the colors in the front. Tedious, but it'd be worth it.

2- The boxes in the foreground are really out of place. Desatureate those. Or, at least, I would.

Over all it's great, keep up the outstanding work. Favorited for sure.

user
warleygp (Level 3 Private Eye) at 5/31/2006 7:48:25 AM
I love all the details! Great!

user
Tremulant (Level 1 Gangster) at 5/30/2006 7:54:42 PM

I love it, but fully second Stitchy's comments. Actually I tried it and replacing the black with a dark, desaturated blue helps alot, imo. Then again, the black may be a stylistic choice, so...  Either way, it's a definite 5 from me.

user
Aiko (Level 1 Quiet One) at 5/30/2006 10:28:46 AM
simply beautiful.

user
Afflict (Level 4 Lieutenant) at 5/29/2006 10:35:15 PM

I love this kind of scene, favo'd. Give me back memorires of good games, like Tombraider, SC, etc.

user

Love it so damn much!

user
iSTVAN (Level 8 Cannibal) at 5/29/2006 4:15:01 AM
I really love this jalonso! I've been more and more inclined to pixel art that relates directly to  original games lately, and this is mighty impressive! The very far backgrounds impress me most, nice work!

user
Huggkruka (Level 1 Rookie) at 5/29/2006 2:50:51 AM
Lovely blue shades. 36 colours is really good too. The lamps by the doors could be a bit brighter, but that's just a tiny nitpick. Really good overall.

user
jalonso (Level 11 Godfather) at 5/29/2006 2:14:48 AM
@dm404 and Stichy, those were issues raised on the WIP thread in the forum you can view a version with your suggestions there.
@-DE-, I had to work within the style of the sprites not made by me for this game. I hardly ever use black outlines and actually hate them, so I agree 100% with you.
@sedge, its not ISo or a Joint room

user
sedgemonkey (Level 11 Master Assassin) at 5/29/2006 1:40:54 AM
Phenomenal work jalonso. One of the best pixel city backgrounds I've ever seen.

user
jessi (Level 1 Rookie) at 5/29/2006 1:35:37 AM

lol. Wow it looks so real.  Well done jalonso

user
Stitchy (Level 6 SWAT) at 5/28/2006 4:08:06 PM
Wow, the buildings in the distance are what really make this piece. But the light brown building is kinda distracting... perhaps add some bluish shading to it instead so it sort of "fits" more into the picture without it blending with the background?

But, really, this is spectacular. Hope to see more from you~

user
-DE- (Level 9 Executioner) at 5/28/2006 1:09:53 PM
The only part I don't like are the stark black outlines. It takes away a lot from this picture IMO.
The BG is class, though.
"i going to say" - thumbs up!

user
Fred (Level 3 Enforcer) at 5/28/2006 7:39:54 AM
What i going to say? That's great! I love the dark climat, just like Deus Ex title town  Perfect colors, superb dithrening shading...Keep it up.

user
dm404 (Level 1 Rookie) at 5/28/2006 3:53:03 AM
Indeed this is very atmosphereic.  One suggestion though, I think the background needs to be less monocromatic, but I'm guessing you intended to do that.  Good work.  I love cityscape backgrounds!

user
Larwick (Level 8 Regional Boss) at 5/28/2006 2:17:59 AM

Wicked, really atmoshperic. Hopefully your next one will be just as good ^_^ +fav

user

user

Greate scene! I like it all

user
jalonso (Level 11 Godfather) at 5/27/2006 9:56:44 PM
Thank you all.
@Boder, A group of people with different skills, music, bkg art, sprites, programming, soundFX, that get together to make a games.
@Ensellitis, I'll propose that idea (called parallax?) to the group (sounds hard to do).
@setzer, there's a small iso easter egg in it, +10 forum coins if you find it.

user
Boder (Level 2 Corporal) at 5/27/2006 9:48:39 PM
So damn good.

But what's a game clan? And I agree that you absolutely have to do this parallax, like Ensellitis said. If I was playing this game with silky smooth parallax effects, I think I'd give birth to lovebabies that would bring instant world peace.

user
radio_active (Level 2 Corporal) at 5/27/2006 9:12:53 PM
amazing! cant wait to play!

user
diefox (Level 1 Rookie) at 5/27/2006 9:02:18 PM

Simply amazing. And this is just your first BK
+7/fav

user
Ensellitis (Level 11 Sensei) at 5/27/2006 7:18:07 PM
You should consider making a layer for each background, so when you move, you can have each move at a different speed.  Here is a good example of what I mean.

Great job!

user
alkaline (Level 6 Yonkyu) at 5/27/2006 7:10:09 PM
A wonderful scene. Great job jalonso :D
