I don't like the BG either, and one of the reason is exactly the difference in style between the mountain+hill and the cloud.
Regarding the growing plant: yes, it's used in this game, it measures time. When reaches the top, another row of boxes fall down.

Overall a great look. However, there is something about the complexity of the clouds versus the simplicity of mountain peaks and hills that just don't match for me. The BG I don't find horrible but could be improved as mentioned. Seeing this explains your other new piece, the growing vine, which made no sense to me

Indeed, learning some different dithering techniques would reduce the amount of colors used on the background and help out the hill.

yeah bg is only problem, you could have pulled off the same effect with 2 colors.  great job

I think the background could use a bit of work, maybe add more depth to the cloud and try a flat coloured sky or mabye even a gradient.

not bad.  some of the shading looks a little bland (clouds and mountain) but other than that it looks pretty good.
