Rider - my first pixel art since 1993! Uses the Amiga 12-bit colour palette.

Based on 'Death Dealer' by Frank Frazetta.

Was great fun revisiting Dpaint in over a decade. I've got the bug

Oh yea - you can find the WIP anim gif here ....

Its big and impressive on 1st sight. The composition is snappy !
Lacks detail and looks sort of vague on closer look though.

Wow, "Prisoner of the Horned Helmet" by James Silke is one of my favorite books.  You really captured the Death Dealer here, great job.  I would LOVE to see the full thing with the horse, BTW.

Oh, that's really nice.

Imo it's a bit too evil-ish, don't like that sort of stuff, but from a pixelling point of view this is phenomonal. (Did I spell that right?)

user

Thanks for your great comments . They are really appreciated.

grave: I'd like to do the full piece, with the horse - one day, perhaps.

At the moment I'm working on a new style (for me) - aimed at what I've seen on pixeljoint, and what I see as the modern way for pixel gfx - a cleaner feel rather than wasting pixels to AA. Ironically back in the Amiga days we dreamt of infinite colors & high resolution, we antialiased everything to compensate for low resolution, and would have given our right arm for Photoshop.

I love the fact that today, with all the available hi-tech gfx packages, people are still restricting themselves to 12-bit pallettes, 320x200, and discussing techniques in overcoming restrictions that haven't been a problem for 15 years.

Fantastic .

Long live pixel art.

user

come on this is the "Death dealer" not rider

user
grim666 (Level 1 Rookie) at 12/3/2006 11:46:20 PM
You should put the Frank Frazetta's name in the comments this is his "Death Dealer" I hope you know that. Other then that good work and his eyes should be red for the demon mask that has trapped him comes from a bloody keep and everyone knows that demons have red eyes except  Loke  he has green:0

user
vanSchmidt (Level 1 Intern) at 12/3/2006 12:23:28 PM
This style rocks the most in my opinion. This is mind blowing, you're awesome and ur a good role model! lol. I want to draw just like you..it looks supurb and theres nothing you can do better on it. omg

user
verfum (Level 3 Private Eye) at 9/1/2006 2:36:47 AM

Ok Helm, I'll bear that in mind for the future. My next piece will be original.

SeanGraal - dpaint was a graphics tool for the Amiga.

user

There's a link to the reference work at the beginning of the comments. Do you mean put it in the description?

user
Helm (Level 5 Detective) at 8/29/2006 3:10:24 PM
Please always credit the original artist if you copy. Most of us might know this is Death Rider by Frank Frazetta, but even if one person doesn't know this and thinks it's your own, you've passively decieved that person.

I personally have no interest in copies, unless there's extremely high technical skill involved in the repixelling. Looking forward to nocopy artwork.

Woah, that's realy awesome!i am not worthy xD

user
xdjkittiex (Level 1 Quiet One) at 8/24/2006 6:35:37 PM
I like the dithering - it gives everything a nice smooth look - instead of the metal having an overly shiny look to it, the dull smooth shine gives it a very eerie feel to it which I think fits the overall piece.  I really like this piece - definately faving.

user
Elk (Level 3 Stalker) at 8/24/2006 9:52:25 AM
very very nice on the axe and coat

pure class!  thanks for sharing.

user
Valcron (Level 2 Corporal) at 8/23/2006 11:35:11 AM
Personally I don't agree with everyone saying there's too much dithering.  It uses just the right amount to retain a clean enough look.

And personally the staff of the weapon looks perfect.

These are probably only biased on my views though, as others have other views.  I personally though think that the dithering is in perfect amount.

user
verfum (Level 3 Private Eye) at 8/23/2006 10:15:14 AM
I think my next pixel art will use less dithering. Try to give it a more clean look with more sharp detail. This piece is more of a painting replicated in pixels.

user
Schnauzer (Level 1 Quiet One) at 8/23/2006 10:12:14 AM
Animation where?

user
verfum (Level 3 Private Eye) at 8/23/2006 9:46:36 AM
I created the WIP anim the hard way by saving a new file numbered chronologically each time I changed something. The anim was stitched using Easy GIF Animator.

user
neota (Level 7 Ichikyu) at 8/23/2006 7:54:28 AM
It's good to see your WIP anim.. I'm amazed at the amount of times you corrected it. Personally for building WIP anims I have a custom plugin that lets me take a snapshot at anytime and orders them chronologically in an animation -- that seems enough like a chore to me, do you use an easier method?

There are a few places where style cannot really excuse the amount of dithering used -- most obviously on the browned area of the blade where I would expect relatively tight highlights.

I like the BG most, actually.

user
Evil-Ville (Level 1 Thug) at 8/23/2006 7:51:16 AM
Looks good but some parts would do with some cleaning up. (Mainly the shield I think) Colours are a bit boring too, would look better with some variation.

Ps. You should make something more original next time

user
Dark Rogue (Level 5 Rokkyu) at 8/23/2006 6:40:06 AM
It looks wonderful, oilpainting-ish. 6/6 + fav.

Cheers guys! Not sure what to do next.

user

Really brilliant mate! I love the pastely look to it, it's like it's been painted in oils. :) A*

user
Macks (Level 5 Detective) at 8/23/2006 3:57:31 AM
I would question how you achieved such smooth shading if I hadn't seen it myself.
Absolutly beutiful.

The WIP gif is really interesting to watch the way you went about drawing your picture.

user
Sgrum (Level 5 Captain) at 8/23/2006 1:15:32 AM
Ooops. I put an strange " whit" . sorry

user
Sgrum (Level 5 Captain) at 8/23/2006 1:13:20 AM
I´d like whit this "too much" dithering. Not all works must be making with the minimum dithering. It gives you a personal style and makes it easily differenciate from other artists (like me with my scrappy fur).Carry on with it.

user
Llama (Level 3 Hatchikyu) at 8/22/2006 11:35:17 PM
Great job!

user
InvaderLupus (Level 1 Intern) at 8/22/2006 11:03:49 PM
I like how the dithering gives the piece a smooth look. However, the lack of dithering on the shield really makes it contrast with the rest of the piece. I think it would look a lot better if you added a bit more dithering to the shield, or if you really like the way the shield looks, the remove a lot of the dithering on the rest of the piece to provide continuity.

user
ryumaru (Level 3 Private Eye) at 8/22/2006 9:00:01 PM
yeah, i put this in graphics gale, and found 2 ramps of grey and a ramp full of blacks. other than color wasting i kind of like this.

user
Schnauzer (Level 1 Quiet One) at 8/22/2006 8:29:10 PM
Absolutely amaxing. Hard to believe is pixel art.

user
Carnivac (Level 8 Shodan) at 8/22/2006 7:05:10 PM
It's a nice piece but generally I ain't a fan of pieces copied from other peoples work like this as the best things about this piece just come straight from the original's design.  It's nicely done though I think the shield looks a tad sloppy.

user
big brother (Level 11 Admiral) at 8/22/2006 6:55:22 PM

Death Dealer!

I like the technique, but my eyes want detail!

user
Monkeyspork (Level 1 Rookie) at 8/22/2006 5:58:39 PM

ohh man you rock!

And that step by step is great, i guess if i want to produce something awesome like this i gotta spend more time on things :D

user
ptoing (Level 7 Underboss) at 8/22/2006 5:07:10 PM
Looks quite nice, but i have to say that the colours are quite boring and lack depth. There could be more hue variation and a bit higher contrast. you are also wasting quite a few of your colours.

Also, why choose a pic as reference that has already been copied quite a few times.

user
Sora_Keyheart (Level 1 Rookie) at 8/22/2006 4:32:41 PM
Great job, truly a masterpice.

user

And I can see you haven't lost your touch since your last pixel art !

user
verfum (Level 3 Private Eye) at 8/22/2006 3:08:22 PM

For interest sake, has anyone looked at the WIP anim? I'm quite new to the WIP thing and I'm interested if it's worth the effort in making. The link is in the description, but here also for reference :

user
verfum (Level 3 Private Eye) at 8/22/2006 3:04:44 PM

Badass: I totally agree with your comment about dithering - I'm a sucker for it. I think I use dithering a bit too much - and looking back at my old stuff that has too much dithering too. I made a concerted (is that a word?) effort to try to reduce dithering when I was doing game gfx - see my Flintstones gfx.

Thx for your comment.

user
Valcron (Level 2 Corporal) at 8/22/2006 3:02:54 PM
Words are not even worthy.

Fav'd and 5/5.

user
verfum (Level 3 Private Eye) at 8/22/2006 2:59:10 PM
Tomas - I agree about the shield  - I had spent so much time on the rest of the picture that I rushed the shield. But in a strange way I like the rawness that it gives (well, that's my excuse ).

user
Badassbill (Level 10 Maniac) at 8/22/2006 2:59:09 PM
Holy shit that wins! A tad too much dithering for my taste, but very nice lineart and lighting.

user
Tomas (Level 4 Deputy) at 8/22/2006 2:54:09 PM
This I like - great stuff! I think if you increase the contrast a bit it will be even more amazing though. And the shield looks a bit unfinished in a way.

user
verfum (Level 3 Private Eye) at 8/22/2006 2:49:46 PM
The original Frazetta is far superior

user
verfum (Level 3 Private Eye) at 8/22/2006 2:48:26 PM

Here's a link to the reference material. Thanks Sqrum for pointing out this is based on a Frazetta piece.

http://www.chrisis.org/chr_paint/ffrazetta_images/ff_dealer.jpg

user
verfum (Level 3 Private Eye) at 8/22/2006 2:26:29 PM

Hi Sqrum! It's based on a frazetta piece - can't remember what it's called, but I've got references if you'd like them. I wanted something fantasy like to kick-start my pixelling for the first time in over 10 years. I'm a bit rusty and fantasy work is the best coz it can hide your mistakes quite well because its not entirely clear what is't supposed to look like

user
Sgrum (Level 5 Captain) at 8/22/2006 2:08:02 PM
Great job! It´s based on a Frank Frazetta work. The shades are really ok, but the red brightness over his face seems odd. I think it must be smoother.
