Commodore 64 IFLI (2004)

Photo reference was used for some animals. This image was influenced by Cyclone's Amiga picture "Killer Animal Reign", which was a remake of Made's "Animal Reign".

he just said it wrong, he meant that this is so good it looked too good to be pixel art, but he knows it is.

EDIT: this is fantastic btw

Great pic, you did a really good job blending the different beasties into a dynamic composition. I'm a big fan of the pics by Cyclone and Made too :)

Jailbird/Booze Design (Level 1 Rookie) at 9/18/2006 9:12:52 AM
Let alone that Cyclone's and Made's extraordinary works are pixelled too, now how could you cope with that, Tomster?

Draco9898 (Level 1 Rookie) at 9/18/2006 6:26:24 AM
Tomster, you innane comments have to stop. Of course this is pixelart. It looks real due to the good desgin, portportions and insane dithering. So mind yourself before you keep shooting your mouth off everywhere

tomster 3785 (Level 1 Rookie) at 9/18/2006 2:56:27 AM

no I know it is, it's just really good, really realistic,

@tomic: I dont follow what you mean

tomic (Level 10 Lieutenant General) at 9/17/2006 2:21:03 PM

Jailbird/Booze Design (Level 1 Rookie) at 9/17/2006 2:05:34 PM

Tomster: well, I'm not sure what is the reason for your statement, but in case you need proofs for the handpixelling, here are the workstages.

tomster 3785 (Level 1 Rookie) at 9/17/2006 12:11:51 PM
hard to believe it's pixel art

Pieface (Level 3 Sergeant) at 9/17/2006 5:55:58 AM
Absoloutely Awesome 5/5 +fav

Jailbird/Booze Design (Level 1 Rookie) at 9/17/2006 4:48:58 AM

Thanks for your kind feedbacks! :)

Considering the reality/naturality of the animals, that was definitely not my intention. I was more heading to caricature-alike representation. Not too cartoonish, tough. During pixelling, I kept in my mind to make some kind of a mixture of Cyclone's and Made's compositions, and to include typicalities from both styles into this C64 picture.

Weasel (Level 1 Depressed) at 9/17/2006 4:13:02 AM
Really amazing, the composion's very pleasing to the eye as well.

Though I would have to agree with Larwick about the bear's head not quite looking natural, maybe it's just the angle, as all the other animals aren't facing forward in the same way as the bear?

Larwick (Level 8 Shodan) at 9/17/2006 3:26:56 AM
This is incredible, the general concept and design is awesome. I must say i think the bear's head looks more like some sort of mask, can't quite tell why. Keep it up dude.

exceptional use of the palette too

Jailbird/Booze Design (Level 1 Rookie) at 9/11/2006 4:22:36 AM

Thanks for the comments :)

Ptoing: well yes, I was hesitating a bit wether I should upload dithered or blurred images... In the end I decided for the dithered as it gives back the pixelling tehniqe the most. At the very least, look on it as it's not even an actual c64 image but a regular composition made on PC with the C64's color palette... ;)

In case someone is wondering, IFLI is a C64 graphicsmode where two low-res images are interlaced, giving an illusion of a hi-res screen. The TV set shows a blurred, flickering image where you couldn't see the actual pixels. Coloring restrictions are theorically same as in FLI mode (not unlimited, but close to). In the editor, you don't work with two low-res images or a blurred one, yet with one hi-res, so the screnshot more or less apply to my pixelling-tehniqe. When I make a blurred screenhot, it's a bit siddapointing as new colors appear which I've never seen during my work :(

ptoing (Level 6 Made) at 9/11/2006 4:06:46 AM
Hey Jailbaby, nice to see you here. But it's a pit deceptive to post the IFLIs like this, most people here are not aware of c64 modes and dunno how IFLI really looks on a C64 what with the blurring and all but I guess if you would post them as blurred images most users here would go "WTF!?" :D

So i guess this is OK as it shows the technique behind the picture more.
