Here's the map to go along with the start screen I just posted. I pixelled the entire map by hand (including researching the political borders of Europe in 1900!) but I cheated on the dithering of the gradient; I did a color-reduction in Photoshop and then did a lot of cleaning up by hand.

The larger text at the top and bottom use a font I designed myself for this game.

Wow, ManningKrull, I played the demo and it looks amazing. Nice gameplay and theme etc.
Definitely 5/5 + fav.
Nice job!

That game is soo cool!! I love it, but when he jumps it's weird you have to run then jump to move, which is real

rockybolan (Level 1 Thug) at 4/8/2007 2:17:11 AM
I so want to play this game.

Huggkruka (Level 1 Rookie) at 10/18/2006 10:26:11 AM
Just wanted to add that I agree with control in the air when you jump(I think someone commented on that) would be a good idea. And I forgot to say I really really dig the concept of getting cursed in a number of ways to get to the final level.

The demo of the game is online!!! http://www.manningkrull.com/games/curses   I fixed the colors of the map, and made a lot of other little corrections.

I pressed "x", nothing happened xD...naah just kidding

Good Job

Jaseowns (Level 1 Rookie) at 10/1/2006 8:48:06 PM
I agree with ManningKrull on the map deal. My eyes were drawn to the water at first, could not figure out what land mass the map was. Other than that, looks great! - jaseowns

Great work again!

sensation (Level 1 Intern) at 9/27/2006 6:06:14 AM
try doing this, switching the gradients around for the land and the ocean, make the gradient going towards the land lighter, and the gradient going towards the ocean darker and just for the heck of it, i'm i'm seeing the land/ocean switch that everyone else i seeing at first glance as well XD other than that, this is absolutely amazing. the way this map seems to be tilted and even the slightest bit of animation you've added makes this come alive and actually feel like the game is completed and i'm at the stage selection screen. good job mate! :D

ManningKrull (Level 6 Hitman) at 9/27/2006 2:40:30 AM

I definitely can't argue with anyone's opinions, but it's strange, because in any old-fashioned map -- or any modern map, for that matter -- the land is always darker than the sea; the edges are darkened/lightened just like in the above. So it's weird that people are having the reaction they're having, but I still need to do something to try to fix it. A sea serpent or something is a great idea!

Toe_Fungi (Level 1 Rookie) at 9/27/2006 12:04:39 AM
He, he i understand the title, how annoying that can be.

maloART (Level 5 Serial Killer) at 9/26/2006 11:45:52 PM

You should maybe add some old style sea serpent or a compass rose like this :Rose des vents. This would stop the confusion around the sea and the earth without changing the shades you've done...

Good stuff here, I especially like the font.

Darien (Level 2 Dealer) at 9/26/2006 8:10:59 PM
I thought the land and ocean were reversed, too.  I think it's because the land is darker than the water.  I guess it's a minor problem, but you might want to fix it anyways.

It looks very nice and old-timey, I'm looking forward to the game very much

Yarr ! france france !

Good work ^^

Dark Rogue (Level 5 Rokkyu) at 9/26/2006 1:29:19 PM
lol! At first glance, I thought the same thing. You're currently in France, right? Tribute to France. My only crit is how unsmooth the two circle expanding thing is. That, and the land/sea thing. Otherwise, great job. (PS : You might just be able to make the sea darker than the land without switching out the two colors.)(PSS : Looks like most of the game's gonna be in Europe. Sweet.(Sorry for lack of indents, Opera doesn't let me.)

Reminds me of the India Jones point&click adventures' world maps. :)
Great

ManningKrull (Level 6 Hitman) at 9/26/2006 1:11:39 PM

NO ONE UNDERSTANDS MY ART, MAN! Haha, that's a great point, and I'll try it the other way and see how it looks. Thanks!!! I really appreciate the critiques!

Pieface (Level 3 Sergeant) at 9/26/2006 12:45:43 PM
I gotta agree with Gunstar i thought the land was sea and sea was land. other than that great job 5/5

Gunstar_Red (Level 1 Rookie) at 9/26/2006 12:09:49 PM
I think it's excellent looks really cool, however for some reason my eye sees the Sea as the land and the land as the sea I have no idea why it could be the darkend edges you have to the land mass, looks a bit like a drop shadow from the sea area.

It's a minor problem tho.

ManningKrull (Level 6 Hitman) at 9/26/2006 11:58:13 AM

Thanks, folks! I'm glad no one's mad at me about the gradient/color reduction thing. And I should also mention, for however careful I was to research turn of the century European borders, I was equally lazy about Africa, South America, etc, so I'm sure they're very very wrong. They don't figure into the game too heavily though, so I think it'll be okay for now.

I had an idea, after I finished thing, for a really cool level set in California, and then I remembered it wasn't on my map so I said forget it!!! No way I'm doing this again! :)

Thanks for the advice about Cuba, jalonso. I will definitely be revisiting this thing and cleaning up some countries here and there. This was a huge learning experience, in both pixel art and georgraphy!

nvision (Level 3 Corporate Drone) at 9/26/2006 11:17:17 AM
Attention to detail and fantastic font gets this a fav!  Very nice work!

jalonso (Level 11 Godfather) at 9/26/2006 10:48:57 AM
Looks great and color choices are awesome. I would remove the 2 pixels on the top of Cuba, 6px across, and 5 on the tail. I hope that makes sense

df0 (Level 3 Enforcer) at 9/26/2006 10:19:37 AM
Really nice map! The font looks good too, it's very NES-like. I like that you took time to research the borders of the time, really ambitious.

Atooi (Level 5 Soldier) at 9/26/2006 9:59:33 AM
Nicely done!

ZoSo (Level 3 Chief) at 9/26/2006 7:04:14 AM
