ZX Spectrum picture: 256x192, 16 colours palette that is basically twice the same 8 colours except slightly darker for the second set. Only 2 colours per 8x8 block.

I used SevenuP for the final corrections and to make sure the picture was fully Spectrum-compliant.

I love the cartoon, it looks awesome except the blue on his finger.

Oh yay, Exocet here?! I love his pics.

This is the best ZX pic I've seen so far, mainly because it doesn't look like ZX pics usually do (I'm not much of a fan of the system to be honest ;). Plus the expressions on the characters are just great :)

maloART: as a matter of fact, I really like the work of Trondheim and Larcenet, which shouldn't surprise you too much :)

This is beautiful ...

It reminds me some (french) comics from Lewis Trondheim or Manu Larcenet ...

Aren't they the same guys from your one Small is Beautiful picture? Your ZX Spectrum piece is damned good, my good man.

Ahh I see, I thought it might me something like that. I wasnt entirely sure how it all worked tho, the rules/restrictions etc to make a true spectrum art piece. Thanx for the explanation guys. I still really like the image overall tho. The style is really nice.

exocet (Level 6 Major) at 10/3/2006 5:15:15 AM

Milkyjon: As Verfum explained, you don't really much choice when it comes to colours in Spectrum pictures :) Had it been a non-Spectrum picture, you can be sure I would have used totally different tones... But yes maybe I could have had the whole picture using the 'bright' setting, if that what you mean.

Verfum: Those pictures look decent, but the dithering and "blocking" seem very mechanical. That looks very similar to what you can get using an automatic converter - yes, there are some around

looks fun and nice comicy lineart... you should try diff styles of coloring/shading

verfum (Level 3 Private Eye) at 10/2/2006 1:23:07 PM

milkyjon - The background can't be white in this case as exocet has used the speccy palette without the 'bright' option set. ZX spectrum images are built up of an array of 32x24 8x8 pixel 'character' blocks. Each 8x8 block can contain two colours from a 3-bit palette (8 colors), but can also have the 'bright' setting, giving you a choice of 2 colors from either the normal (dull) or bright palette. So in theory your picture can contain up to 16 colors in total, although as 'bright' does not work with black (to create an extra shad of grey) you actually only get a maximum of 15 colors. There's debate on what the difference in color is between the normal and 'bright' palette on a speccy and how it relates to your RGB 'photoshop' palette. You'd expect bright white to be 255,255,255 and normal (dull) to be 127,127,127, but in practice it's more like 191,191,191 (as exocet has used).

Enough of the boring theory :P

Great work exocet. I hope to see more work like this on pixeljoint !

For interests' sake I have created several conversions of images to ZX spectrum screens. I can't really post them on pixeljoint as even though they were hand converted, pixel joint takes a harsh view on color-reduced images no matter how they were created. I mean, it's not like there's a speccy reduction tool about (is there?). Let me know what you think exocet. http://www.timsart.co.uk/pixels/speccy_showcase.gif

Again, great work. 5* and fav!!!!

White wouldn't be possible the way it is at the moment though.

milkyjon (Level 4 Murderer) at 10/2/2006 10:39:16 AM
I love the style of this, am not to keen on the grey background myself tho, it makes the piece look a tad dull. White would have been nicer and brighter in my opinion (but each to there own).

Hmm... Dont see this kind of art often. Nice though. 4/5
