What can I say? This is my first official post, and I have to say, this is one sweeeeeeet piece (meriting a possible "schwing" in your general direction. Perhaps two...).

Haha, first thing I thought when I read the description was "USSR had shopping carts?"  :P

I can see both sides of this. Fool and Mykola lived under Russian rule. Blick is American and thinks more of the stereotype of the Russian people!?

Mykola , I hope Blick won't kick my but=)for political disscussion  - I,ve been born in early 60-th, grow up in orphanage, run away lots of times and tried to live in the placed I shouldn't for some time before got caught, I can asure you - there weren't really.=) Well, except gypsies. Everyone lived somewhere, you know what assigned address meant as well as a work duty - there were up to  1 year imprisonment for breaking that laws - my father actually served that in 1980.=)
All crap starts  in the end of 80-th, when imperia falls.

I agree there were barely any shopping carts in stores at that time :) It'd be more fitting to see that lady carry milk bottles in a net bag :)

Still, c'mon man, by the 80's and the Cold War there were plenty of bums around in USSR.

I guess it is true for any country with a different customs. It is not apply to the picture itself, just to the discription of it.=)
And most valueable expression in that image I think - lack of passion of life which is so true for the olders in russia as well=) Details just make it  more informative.

Could've been propaganda of sorts then, I don't know. I just distinctly remember the image of an old lady in such a situation.

And I noticed your mention of how she looks less Russian and more like she has a French influence with the bandanna not covering all of the back of her head, which is funny because I didn't exactly think she looked French, but I definitely saw that it wasn't following the idea of her being Russian as closely as the image in my own mind. Strange how a simple change of one piece of clothing did that.

Man, you've got confused.=)) There was no ANY shoping carts in USSR, in some big supermarkets in rare ocasion. Also, there weren't  homeless people in the USSR back then.
No biggy, it just sounds funny - like bears with balalaikas walking on the streets.=))
