Well, I tried to be a little braver with my color choices (very light to very dark), and I think it turned out pretty well. I also tried a little AA, which made it look better :P My second serious pixel (worthy of posting here ) :P I forgot how many colors :S

yea, I agree its perfect icon for the scene :) You just have to click it.

Like it's already said, perhaps some more details at a few places could add some more interest. Seems like all materials (metal, skin and wood) is treated in same manner.
Overall composition is fine, though I'm not sure what the gestures are. From my own experience, you have to be much closer to the fire to be able to get some warmth :D

Hues and contrast should also be improved, in my personal opinion like this: http://i24.tinypic.com/331n7m9.gif

But to be fair enough, it should be said it's not easy to create a comp like this and get proper lighting, it takes much time.
Great idea and solid composition, if you'd touch it a few times more I'm sure it would be awesome.
This reminds me of Caravaggio, please check out his lighting in pieces like Incredulity of Saint Thomas and similar. Also, if you're interested in techniques of using high keys of lights and darks, you should check out chiaroscuro type of painting.

Nice scene, but it is quite rough and shows little pixel level detailing.
The fire really doesn't look very bright, could do with some more intensity and warmer colouring.
