I think the intensity jump between the black and the darkest grey is a bit harsh though.

Could you tell us about your technique and tool(s) you use? It looks very uncommon to me and would be really interesting to learn about it.

I made a gif animation from your steps and I can't get what you were doing from step 4. Reminded me of painting with finger in general art. I have no idea how could this be done in pixelart. Hope you have time to share. Thanks.
