A quick self-portrait made for use as a Wired user icon.

Very pleased with the likeness, expecially considering the size.

Crittacks and edits encouraged.

Now updated with earlobes and a bunch of other tweaks. Thanks, leel, for the pointers!

Or maybe my autistic brain handles different with information?
(I find them look weird because it looks like his eyes have mustaches..

Hatch (Level 3 Private Eye) at 2/7/2008 5:02:14 PM
Interesting that the eyes look strange to you. My brain still doesn't register anything unusual with them unless I concentrate, even having seen it before. I guess your brain is more advanced than mine? Or maybe it's just upside down in your head. :V

Luckilly I am the google god

mouth was flipped too indeed, but eyes do look weird on the flipped version. Mouth looks better indeed.
I had seen a photo of a girl like this in some newspaper too, they said you will not notice alot of things when you put things upside down and this proves it.

Hatch (Level 3 Private Eye) at 2/7/2008 10:18:46 AM
Bingo. I saw someone do it with a picture of Abraham Lincoln, only I think they flipped the mouth as well. I can't find the pic unfortunately. I thought it was a cool optical illusion; it looked normal upside down, completely alien right side up.

Thanks for playing. You win this rambling comment that the lovely Hatch is holding.

you flipped the eyes aswell so it looks like they are still watching to me?

Hatch (Level 3 Private Eye) at 2/6/2008 7:47:46 PM
There's slightly--very slightly--more to it than a simple flip/rotation. See if you can uncover the hidden secret! Fun for the whole family. Ages 12 and up.

You did not get enough attention without turning your avatar upside down?

I'm sorry, Jal, I would never doubt dear ol' Hatch here, but.. the things I've seen in the art department... oh the horrible, greasy things...

What a great looking portrait. Pixelly, toony, yet realistic.

@leel, don't you know Southern Gentlemen bathe and wash regularly

edit looks great

The flat cartooniness isn't a bad thing, I was just .. stating the obvious I guess haha.   Though perhaps a light source coming from the side would distract from the mirrored outlines.  And I'm not a big fan of the shadow under the hair - maybe round that out a bit, it just makes the forehead look too small at 1x, or add some shadow to the left and right most side of the face.  That'd narrow the face a tad.

Also - I'd get rid of the 2 transparent pixels coming into the hair.  I'm not sure what that's about..  I just creates jaggyness where the hair should fall down smoothly.

And if we're gonna call this jesus - he's gotta be wearing a Vendetta mask XD

Thanks leel.

I wanted to include a pic with this, but I don't have any current photos except as hard copies, and I don't have a scanner. It was made with the assistance of a hand mirror.

Anyhow, I wasn't striving for photorealism or anything; I was going for a simplified look. Not exactly cartoony, just... simplified. Yeah. I really really hope this doesn't sound like a cop-out. Some speculars or something probably wouldn't hurt though, you're right about zer flatness.

I'll add some ears. They were barely visible at all in my hand mirror, so I was like oh screw it. Lazyness. :(

And yes, it gets shampooed AND conditioned every day. It's not hippie stink hair >:o

leel (Level 5 Killer Klown) at 1/13/2008 2:16:28 PM
What is it with artists and long hair?  I mean seriously.. Every other guy in school has hair longer than me!  And mine is about as long as it's ever been.    I hope you at least wash it regularly, cause that's more that I can say for many a classmate.   XD

Looks pretty nice and simple, I really can't say anything about likeness other than it's a little on the cartoony/flat side so I can't quite picture a living person looking like that... maybe some ref pics?   >_>

P.S. You seem to be missing some ears.  A lighter pixel right above the (err how do I explain this) outline where it starts to curve in - with the transparent pixel underneath it.... there - put a lighter pixel (possibly two)  there and it'll imply that the ears are hidden by hair, but are still, in fact, there.
