I stumbled across pixelart a few days ago, and found it quite interesting. So I gave it a go, and this it the outcome of my very first pixelart.

Alright, thank you! Yeah, I know about the 123 colors, "save of web" showed alot of colors which I can't even find in my picture.. :(

Ah, I didn't know the use of transparency was against the rules. Same goes with the grass texture pattern. I understand now. The trees are all handpixeled though

This will take me a long explanation of some things. For now I will tell you that you have 123 colors (a lot are not needed)

The window color with transparency is a bit of a no in pixelart for example. You can do this with opaque colors.
The way you make the textures is something not done in pixelart. I realize you made the texture but you did not control the placement.

I will edit your file just to show you some things. On each layer not from my way or that I am the best at pixelart but just comentary on the things you did wrong and the things you did right.

Thats a lot of layers o.O

*will send in a day or so :)

ps:

I send you a new psd file

Vasquez (Level 1 Gangster) at 2/27/2008 7:38:58 PM

I might wanna redo the tree trunk texture too and then it should be alright, hold on!

Vasquez (Level 1 Gangster) at 2/27/2008 7:24:32 PM

Screw me, I think I spotted the mistake. So I redid the trees and made new grass texture. I've send you the psd file if you wanna check it out.. I hope this helps. The tree leafs is 5 colors and the grass is 6 colors.

when using the pencil tool in photoshop was the tolerance of the tool set to 0 (zero) ?
If you'd like you can send me your photoshop file and I'll have a look at it.
png 8 or png24, for pixelart png 8 and gif is always better.
Did you just save or 'save for web', the latter is better....

Vasquez (Level 1 Gangster) at 2/27/2008 5:32:42 PM
And I checked my layers, all of them are 100, cept the window layer. So it can't be that.

Vasquez (Level 1 Gangster) at 2/27/2008 5:24:50 PM

You're right, something must be wrong, but, I can't hit the image since its not available for viewing until status is changed to active. Thats what it says.

I tried looking at the Colossal Katamari image in the Hall of Fame and pressed the "i", according to the info, that image got 4243 colors, so I think that's where the flaw is..

ps: I'm trying to help only not scare you away or be negative, k.

hmmm... something is very odd then. Maybe your output file or other. Your image has over 1,000 colors. No way you chose that many manually. Maybe you used layers and one is say at 99%?
Generally speaking this piece looks like about 30 colors is all. I did think the grass looked hand pixelled but something is just off. Since you state its all OPATT then it must be output related.

*Hit the image and when the viewer comes up zoom and hit the "i" on the lower corner.

Vasquez (Level 1 Gangster) at 2/26/2008 6:42:36 PM

Hmm, I actually made the grass texture like this: filled a square with the medium green, and then just placed light/dark green dots all over, then made it to a pattern and filled my grass spots with it. Is that illigal? If so, :(

And I swear, I drawed the textures of the tress pixel by pixel, only using the pencil tool, actually spend alot of time on it :/

Oh, and I forgot to say thank you for the welcome, I'll check out the links.

Good news and bad news.
The good is you've found the best art style on the interwebs.
You have done a surprisingly well sketched scene and huge by pixelart standards.
The bad is that you have violated our most sacred rule. Pixelart uses no tools other than the pencil tool. One pixel placed one at a time*. The trees especially shows some tool use of some kind. Possibly the grass too. Using the spraypaint tool in MSPaint, for example is a no-no.

Our links section and the forum is full of the basic techniques and tutorials. The forum is also there to get feedbacks, help and advice.

I welcome you to Pixeljoint and just know you'll get the techniques down quickly. I highly encourage you to keep this piece for the future. Someday when your pixelart kicks ass you'll be asked to show your first and this will be prefect to show and have a laugh.

To be clear. It is sent back not because it sucks or is bad, only that the techniques used are not considered pixelart.

*the bucket tool may be used to fill large single colored areas, such as the road in your scene.
