Atleast do something with his hair. Perhaps you should drop the grey-ish fur and make it more brown-ish like his hair.

I personally think your sulotion isnt the best solution... a good one but there must be better ways :P By the way you made his fur thesame everywhere... do you really like it better that way?

By removing the shading from weak areas and add stronger shading at deep areas, you might get your wanted effect.

Hmm I get what you're saying, but i dont know a real solution... Adding more colours would kill the style and hard edges didt look good either...
