Decided to attempt an FPS style game, which is my least favourite genre.

Had another screen going, but ran out of time:( Going to be out all day tomorrow and it's already approaching 6am so submitting it as is.

Congrats! i tottaly loved this one so therefore i voted for you.

iLKke (Level 8 Cannibal) at 5/16/2009 5:30:36 AM

Totally impossible on a real gameboy, but oh so cool!

Certainly stands out from the rest.

Riva (Level 5 Captain) at 5/11/2009 2:49:05 PM

Stickman - You are right with Mirrors Edge, but for GameBoy I was imagining something much older grade. On level of doom or Heretic, max.

Wolverine (Level 8 Brigadier General) at 5/10/2009 5:13:52 AM

I can't stand most FPS games but this looks like something I would like to play even just to gaze at the lovely low color pixel work.

blueleds (Level 1 Rookie) at 5/9/2009 12:51:23 PM

Ermm, I think the game would work if the background were prerendered and static... think of those 3D parts in Contra on the NES, something like that.  You would come to an area, clear the monsters there, and then it would advance to the next area "on-rails," maybe after you've searched the area for items, clues, and then decide which general direction to go (north, south, east, west).

The exact gameplay mechanics might be difficult in terms of how would you aim precisely... perhaps a targetting reticule that you move with the d-pad... and then A to shoot, B for grenades or something.

I think it odd though, on closer inspection, that a regular handgun (the one with the shell casings ejecting) would be able to do damage to phantoms/ghosts?  But I remember when playing FEAR 2 Project Origin, you could shoot the ghosts and they would dissappear... and it didn't seem that strange there.

Stickman (Level 5 Detective) at 5/9/2009 9:31:37 AM

@Riva - Oh I know you wasn't arguing with me. I hope my comment didn't come across that way.

Your right about the textures being more pixelated.

In regards to angles, I play mirrors edge quite a bit and there are a lot of angles (wall runs, rolls, vaults etc) which is something that really drew me to the game along with being able to see your feet. (which might sound strange, but I could never understand why so many fps omit this).

Riva (Level 5 Captain) at 5/9/2009 8:16:52 AM

Stickman - I didnt mean to argue with you or crit you piece. It looks awesome.
I just wrote what popped in my mind.

Anyway if you are interested - By not-FPS style I ment: FPS games (especialy on lo-performance devices) are a lot more rough. For one they lack any AA on the 3d shapes. Also The textures would be more
pixelated (lower res) and nothing would be so detaily shaded. Also the camera is strange. In old FPS games camera was always more-less alignerd with ground and never moved in strange angles represented in your pictures.

blueleds (Level 1 Rookie) at 5/9/2009 3:24:20 AM

Considering it's your least favourite genre, you really made an interesting looking FPS game there... what with the unusual perspectives and phantom enemies.

DJD (Level 4 Button Man) at 5/7/2009 9:34:55 PM

the perspective is wonky but stylistically it's totally awesome and really well done. I love the hand/gun parts, really nice.

JosephSeraph (Level 1 Rookie) at 5/6/2009 3:45:34 PM

I don´t think how that could be possible on the GBC, but great work indeed... I wish i participated u.u

CrisNMP (Level 1 Depressed) at 5/6/2009 11:39:51 AM

I voted for this one.

Stickman (Level 5 Detective) at 5/6/2009 5:33:30 AM

@Levi: No probs dude:) I never had a gameboy, so I don't know if there were any psuedo 3D type games.

@ Riva: The only fps type game I've played is Mirrors Edge, so all of my experiences come from that (oh yeah - also Alien Breed 3D on the Amiga).

However - even though it might not resemble Quake/Doom/Halo etc (and I'm not to sure why it would need to) I do feel it does work as an FPS style game.

Riva (Level 5 Captain) at 5/6/2009 4:06:29 AM

I love the art, but the fact that it isn't even created in style to resemble realtime fps game is kind of ruining the impression for me.
(I know it probably doens't matter for the challenge, but it kinda does for me)

Levi (Level 1 Rookie) at 5/5/2009 4:34:02 PM

Dude, I gotta say, I wanted to vote for this because it was my favorite piece of pixel art in the challenge... but there's just no way that it would work on a Game Boy :(

Seriously though, this is impressive work, especially for 4 colors.  Awesome job dude!

dpixel (Level 6 Major) at 5/4/2009 1:54:55 PM

FPS are my least favorite genre too, but this looks like it would be fun.  I really like those phantom things.

God_Is_Evil (Level 3 Hatchet Man) at 5/4/2009 9:43:18 AM

Great idea, and it looks great.

Stickman (Level 5 Detective) at 5/4/2009 9:16:02 AM

Thanks for the comments:)

@Dr D: Yeah your right about the buiding which is my fault for starting a piece at 2am:0

@Reo: It is indeed a phantom/ghost sucker:)

@Ui: Damn - If I had more screen to do I  would of done an 80's soundtrack selector!!! (and you need to start getting back into these competitons my friend;))

ui_ (Level 1 Rookie) at 5/4/2009 8:11:28 AM

woah!, you always got my vote :DDD.... nice game... iwant to play this!!! JAJAJ XD.... can i do the music for this game???...... i like how you use all the colors and thoses weapons, they looks nasty, but the gun seen like strange against ghosts, but the cannon looks good as it's atleast for me.... good job

Reo (Level 11 Sensei) at 5/4/2009 6:30:31 AM

I don't think its a rocket launcher its a ''ghostsucker'' you know like in chostbusters.

This is awesome :D

Photocopier (Level 8 Regional Boss) at 5/4/2009 4:23:49 AM

I voted this, great stuff! the only problem I imediatly see is that the handle on the rocket launcher looks wierd.

Peach (Level 5 Soldier) at 5/4/2009 2:28:25 AM

strong and original :)

u got my vote

Wu! (Level 1 Seaman) at 5/3/2009 11:05:34 AM

o wow..

the perspective on the right is so wicked.

And the shades and faces. Hmm i'd love to play that on gameboy.

oh and the hand and gun rock, too!

Perkele (Level 2 Quiet One) at 5/3/2009 8:47:24 AM

Wow, that's great.

lucas_irineu (Level 5 Killer Klown) at 5/3/2009 8:14:48 AM

Awesome. One of the best entries I have seen on this challenge.

Tunc (Level 2 Petty Officer) at 5/3/2009 1:40:45 AM

Wow, fps on gameboy XD Very nice

Dr D (Level 2 Kukyu) at 5/3/2009 12:09:10 AM

Is the guy falling over?

Regardless, it looks pretty awesome.

For some reason, the building on the left seems to look to me as if it twists a little at the top, though. I don't know.

Hydronium (Level 3 Enforcer) at 5/2/2009 11:52:04 PM

That's really nice - I love the perspective and use of color on the buildings.
