Yes the eyes seem larger than they should be due to those lines that were mean't to show certain facial expressions, didn't work though, as you saw.
To my defence I though it had less contrast. I'm working on a very old laptop and choosing colours on this thing is a bitch. Surprisingly your edits colours are more for what I thought I had. Acually they are...lol, like I said monitor is messed up. But no excuses, I'll fix this up ;)

Aside from being not very anatomically correct (Eyesize, basically) the way you've shaded is just making the face look really wrinkly- instead of lines, do blocks of different colour. There doesn't really seem to be a defined lightsource either.

It looks oekaki-ish because of all that too.
Experimentation is fun :)
