lets face it: iI am a Steampunk fag. but god knows how much I love cogs and steam, and overly complicated mechanisms, and those victorian ladies, and their detailed dresses...

Just a suggestion: why don't you try to render the smoke as pencil strokes, instead of comics bubbles?
