"I have heard about three monks. No names are mentioned, because they never disclosed their names to anybody. They never answered anything.

In China, they are simply known as the three laughing monks. And they did only one thing: they would enter a village, stand in the market place and start laughing. They would laugh with their whole being and suddenly people would become aware. Then others would also get the infection and a crowd would gather. The whole crowd would start laughing just because of them. What was happening? The whole town would get involved. Then they would move to another town. ”They were loved very much. That was their only sermon, their only message; that laugh. And they would not teach; they would simply create a situation.

”Then it happened that they became famous all over the country. Three laughing monks. All of China loved them, respected them. Nobody had ever preached in such a way that life must be just a laughter and nothing else. They were not laughing at anyone in particular. They were simply laughing as if they had understood the Cosmic joke. And they spread so much joy all over China without using a single word. People would ask for their names, but they would simply laugh. So that became their name – the three laughing monks.

”Then they grew old. And while staying in one village. one of the three monks died. The whole village became very much expectant because they thought that when one of them had died, the other two would surely weep. This must be worth seeing because no one had ever seen these people weeping. The whole village gathered. But the two monks were standing beside the corpse of the third and laughing – such a belly laugh. So the villagers asked them to explain this.

”So for the first time, the two monks spoke and said, ’We are laughing because this man has won. We were always wondering as to who would die first and this man has defeated us. We are laughing at our defeat and his victory. Also he lived with us for many years and we laughed together and we enjoyed each other’s togetherness, presence. There can be no better way of giving him the last send off. We can only laugh.

”But the whole village was sad. And when the dead monk’s body was put on the funeral pyre, then the village realized that the remaining two monks were not the only ones who were joking, the third who was dead was also laughing. He had asked his companions not to change his clothes. It was conventional that when a man died they changed his dress and gave a bath to the body. So the third monk had said, ’Don’t give me a bath because I have never been unclean. So much laughter has been in my life that no impurity can accumulate, can come to me. I have not gathered any dust.

Laughter is always young and fresh. So don’t give me a bath and don’t change my clothes.’ ”So just to respect his wishes, they did not change his clothes. And when the body was put to fire, suddenly they became aware that he had hidden some Chinese fire-works under his clothes and they had started going off. So the whole village laughed and the other two monks said: ’You rascal, you are dead, but you have defeated us once again. Your laughter is the last."

Osho

UPD:

I think I should explain what it is for.

It is a background (room) for the possible game project. It is muted in colors for the reason - at some point they will laugh and all terracota piececs will fall off the golden figures added a color to the word around. Have absolutely no idea how I gonna do this, but thats a plan.=) There will be some foreground objects and sprites that should take care of scale as well. Visable area of the image will be 800x600 (currently 640x480).

am I reading into it or is this the answer to the question that troubled your head when you said you wouldnt pixel anymore?. it seems a perfect fit. Might I ask....what kind of game is it....platformer?you working on it with anyone else? can you spill anything?

user
ui_ (Level 4 Deputy) at 8/18/2010 10:04:50 PM

@fool, really thx for you sharing your art with us :). Your a pixel artist leyend already and we all have the pleasure to have you around this community from time to time. Dont matter what is, you always show us how you put all your effort in your pieces and how humble you are...

about the piece... (thinking out of the cube) you should add a tittle in chinese letters and print poster for sale! XDDD... seriously.... grettings and thx for appear from time to time! :DDD...

user
Ambient (Level 5 Captain) at 8/18/2010 3:28:53 PM

The monk on the left has less contrast in its shadows along the lower half (in comparison to the right monk), but has more contrast in the head. I really like what you do with distant objects having low contrast, but this seems a bit inconsistent, especially with them appearing to be at the same depth level.

user
Spherical Ice (Level 2 Dealer) at 8/18/2010 6:55:02 AM

Wow... ... may I ask how long this took?

....wow.

user
Elk (Level 3 Stalker) at 8/15/2010 10:10:07 PM

might also add...just for the sake of boredom, that you could add a somewhat fog effect to the bottom by lighting up areas :D? so they feel more mighty and giant

Thanks Blackbeltdude. I was waiting for someone to express my thoughts as I could not find the words.

user
Blackbeltdude (Level 6 Yonkyu) at 8/6/2010 1:50:17 PM

Personally, I've always hated when people use the word "perfect" with regards to art. It's far too precise of a term for something that's far too subjective.

What I really love about Fool's art (and I mean to use that term in the most sincere way possible), is that he always created a mood or level of emotion in his pieces. That to me is what makes his work truly fantastic; the character that oozes out of his work and the narrative that compels it to do so, is what draws me to it every time. Moreover, I think he's able to be so effective in that process because he not only understands his medium intimately, but also is doing things for the sheer joy of it.

I remember seeing the thumbnail for this thinking that it would have had to have been someone effectively emulating Fool's work. I was quite happy when I saw that it was the man himself posting more of his fantastic talents on this site. :)

user
Hrunting (Level 2 Flatfoot) at 8/5/2010 8:15:27 PM

These pieces are like godsends...How do you manage to churn them out so quickly?  You must have immense amounts of experience.

The backstory is interesting...I suppose you're playing the part, what with your name and avatar and all.

user
cure (Level 11 Sensei) at 8/5/2010 5:28:56 PM

that was just in response to lucas ireneu's comment. which used the words perfect and perfection.

user
Noet (Level 3 Corporate Drone) at 8/5/2010 2:07:17 PM

Sure cure, but the deal is not whether it's perfect or not. I just want him to test do something different, because doing his thing are really no deal for him as we can see. If he's trying to do something with a different style, it may be difficult and more of a challenge for him.

user
cure (Level 11 Sensei) at 8/4/2010 11:52:21 PM

Fool's definitely a great pixel artist, but even he's a few pixels shy of "perfect" (there's a thin line between high praise and deification!)

And I dunno, I'm not sure that fool's a one trick pony...

user
Fool (Level 6 SWAT) at 8/4/2010 12:28:58 PM

I don't know man,. To polsih piece just to enjoy my own reflection is hardly a motivation, but if someone find that approach  pleasable for  them - is totally cool. I do enjoy with doing, thats all it matters.

At this point  you question sounds a lot  like - why do you always scratch where the itch is, why don't you try to scratch other places.=)

user
lucas_irineu (Level 8 Cannibal) at 8/4/2010 10:41:34 AM

I think that some people enjoy working with restrictions, but if thats not your thing, then maybe you shouldn't do it.

But yeah. You said in your post that "It might be boring, unpleasant and disliked by many" - But thats not the case with your work at all. When you ask anyone here who's the best pixel artist in here, or even the best pixel artist ever, the answer will likely be "Yuriy Gusev." or "Fool."

But even though your pieces are perfect, some of them are the same kind of perfection over and over. What I was trying to say is, that it would be great to see something thats still as good, but at the same time, different.

I agree that creating a mood is important and that if thats how you do it you shouldn't stop, but maybe you could try a different mood? [:

user
Fool (Level 6 SWAT) at 8/4/2010 8:24:58 AM

Thats interesting. How do you reason yourself to do things you not really enjoy?

user
Noet (Level 3 Corporate Drone) at 8/4/2010 4:58:54 AM

I agree with the last line, but you somehow have reached the level of perfection already. Why not challenge yourself with doing something you wouldn't normally do? For example make a piece with mspaint palette, or do something unrealistic that you, and noone can make out what it is. Something without meaning.

user
Ivy00 (Level 1 Rookie) at 8/4/2010 1:59:01 AM

My goodness,  you make pixel art such a beautiful thing.  The moment I saw the thumb I knew it was your work.   I love the colors  and when the terracotta pieces fall off of the statues and turn into golden figures it is going to be something to see.  I cannot wait to see that!

user
Fool (Level 6 SWAT) at 8/3/2010 11:41:58 PM

Honestly, I trully believe art is always a field of personal discoveries, if someone else could relate to your work - it is a huge bonus.=) Do whatever pleases the audience is just feels wrong.

I can't say I know my way around colors at all, most of the time I try to create a mood, if it is not readable - I definetely fail to convey my vision, but as long I understand my choices - I would stand for it. It might be boring, unpleasant and disliked by many, but if I feel otherwise - just can't help it, it just works for me. Very same way I used to like other artists work for what it is, not for what it should  be in my opinion.

user
lucas_irineu (Level 8 Cannibal) at 8/3/2010 9:17:09 PM

Fool, I think that all you need is to try some new colours. Your level of detail is perfect, the picture itself is perfect, and while the colours are amazing they all resemble each other and then we end up getting boreed sooner or later, because hey, its amazing, but we have seen that before. I think "Seeder" was one of your best works, if not the best, mostly because of how the colours are different - the way you did it was simply perfect. I'd love to see more blues and reds in your works, some more saturation too. I realize that my art is thousands of times worse than yours and I'm in no position to say whats the "right" thing to do, mostly because there's no "right thing", and I wouldn't be able to do it myself if there were - but I think that I might at least be able to say what I (and probably some others as well) would like to see. And we would like to see more colours. [:

user
Fool (Level 6 SWAT) at 8/3/2010 7:34:27 PM

Thanks guys, I really appreciate your comments.=)

Elk, thanks for pinpointing  those, I'll jump on it.=))

nehter, I guess shades close in value do the trick.

Noet, yeah I've got this a lot from my first wife, she wanted me to be reachier and taller. Funny, i wanted the same thing, but somehow it never happened, have to divorce eventually - couldn't disappoint her any longer.=) Personally I don't think I share the same approach. There are many of us - different in vision and style, thats what makes this place fun to be around.

user
Noet (Level 3 Corporate Drone) at 8/3/2010 5:23:34 PM

Sure, this masterpiece is impressive in every way but still no piece of yours can satisfy me. All your works somehow resembles each other by color, style and feeling. What I want to see is something that's not you, something with same incredible level of detail but you won't know "this is fool", you'll actually be suprised and still impressed in same way.

I wanna be fooled.

How on earth did you make the clouds look so fluffy?!

Werety (Level 1 Jukyu) at 8/1/2010 4:44:27 AM

Chrispy, the monk on the right has clearly 4 fingers visible. One of them is a thumb. One finger is hidden. Then the monk on the left has also 4 fingers visible. The hidden one is thumb. So they've got 5 fingers each hand. :)

user
cure (Level 11 Sensei) at 7/31/2010 11:09:24 PM

none of the four fingers read as a thumb to me, so if he's got four fingers I just assume he has a thumb as well. the hand is tilting away from the viewer so the thumb could easily be concealed.

user
Chrispy (Level 6 Hitman) at 7/31/2010 6:39:52 PM

There is nothing hinting at a hidden thumb.

user
Elk (Level 3 Stalker) at 7/31/2010 12:37:16 PM

Good pixeling but i think it lacks volume in some parts, shadows and lighting being placed wrong :P

else, quite nice, also nice clouds, a little static but good, a better transistion would have made it better i think xD...

:) keep it up!

user
4tochkin (Level 1 Intern) at 7/31/2010 11:51:02 AM

Welcome back! Рад видеть снова в строю. Ошо + ;)

user
Ninja Crow (Level 3 Private Eye) at 7/31/2010 11:47:09 AM

I love it - it's amazing.  I have no idea what your expertise sees that escapes me, but I love the sky and hope you don't have to change it much!  I would say that the realism in the clouds really snaps this picture into an almost three-dimensional focus, giving it a convincing scale and a believable sense of place, as well as answering where the beautiful lighting comes from (how did you get the colours of the sky and the statues to match so well - amazing!) that fills the picture so wonderfully.

This picture will always fill me with warmth and cheer - thank you, thank you so much!

user
cure (Level 11 Sensei) at 7/31/2010 9:01:18 AM

@Chrispy: four fingers and a hidden thumb. quite natural.

user
Xuferluses (Level 2 Quiet One) at 7/31/2010 8:38:24 AM

I'll never look up at clouds the same way...

I'm sure everyone here at pixel joint was happy and laughing even before they read the story, knowing it was your piece. What a great come back!

user

Don't worry, I suppose I skimmed over your comment addressing monochromatic-ness before :P

user
Fool (Level 6 SWAT) at 7/31/2010 3:56:10 AM

Thank you good people for kind words.=)

Skamacore, agree on overdetailing, but could you explain please what color edit does?

TheInqusitor, clouds not fit, I would go for something more stylized rather then realistic. I added explanation to description on what it is, should do it from the start ...
