Started it almost a year ago. Been working on it intermittently ever since. Over 100 hours, though I can't confirm that. Lost track a long time ago. There are a few saved videos of me working on it at my livestream page, but I'm a slow worker, so it's probably more informative to just watch the WIP gif. So there's that.

I basically set out to make something bigger and better than anything I'd ever done. It ended up turning into something that kind of represents everything that I do in art. Anthropomorphic animal character, pixel art, heavily blue-green reliant palette, etc. So yeah, here it is, on Pixeljoint at last.

Spend 100 hours on one thing and let's see what you can do.

user
Mathias (Level 4 Shichikyu) at 12/17/2010 9:49:39 PM

Wow, #1 spot. Deserved, too

This has so much charm.

The lighting and colors are beautiful.

Very systematic WIP! You don't have ADD, that's for sure. I tend to bounce around randomly with a scene like this.

One thing I like about your inherent style, with pixels, is the way you make everything thick and full of body, kind of bulky. For instance, your vegetation here - very bottom right corner. No flat leaves, all rounded with nice reflections and whatnot. That's an interesting gimmick.

It must've felt great to upload this here and announce it complete.

user
tsoccer93 (Level 1 Rookie) at 12/17/2010 7:36:27 AM

It reminds me of Brian Jacques's redwall series, the ferrets where always pirates and badguys. except this is in space.

user
bonehead11 (Level 2 Quiet One) at 12/17/2010 4:02:15 AM

Very live and refreshing style...just beautiful.

user

This picture makes the Mona Lisa look like a simple one color pixel standing on an island of other pixels that are all white.

user
Kaiseto (Level 6 Made) at 11/5/2010 12:23:42 PM

@Opcaus

Oh, don't worry, I don't blame you. The "furry" stuff isn't up most people's alleys. It just happens to be the stuff I draw when I have nothing better in mind to draw. Still, if you're going to favorite one piece from my gallery, I'd rather it be this one :p

user
Reo (Level 11 Admiral) at 11/5/2010 8:59:33 AM

 Fantastic colors, rendering and atmosphere!

user
Opacus (Level 7 Ichikyu) at 11/5/2010 4:05:33 AM

Heh, well for this piece I really only have praise (do agree with Hatch about the rocks.), this is just awesome. The colours, the rock textures, the atmosphere, it's just really great. I think I'm just not a big fan of wolves and human like wolves. I blame DeviantArt, and you're stuff's sometimes a bit too cartoony for me or something. But it's just a matter of opinion really. I do find you a great artist, though. (That probably still sounds rather vague, dunno how to word it properly.)

And thanks man. I gotta say this is probably my personal favorite from you.

user
Psychotron-3000 (Level 5 Detective) at 11/5/2010 12:03:58 AM

Wow! Stunning. The pixelling is so smooth, and I adore the level of detail. The palette really sets the mood, and the OSL is done amazingly.

Kaiseto, you win at life.

user
Kaiseto (Level 6 Made) at 11/3/2010 4:14:45 PM

@Opcaus

Well, that's some mixed praise right there if I ever saw any, but I'll surely take it :p I tend to like your style... (The Deep being a personal favorite)

user
Hatch (Level 3 Hatchikyu) at 11/3/2010 1:57:48 PM

I think the rocks being clustered at the horizon line make the sky look much nearer to him than it should and makes it look a bit like a painted backdrop, but it's a minor complaint and it may just be me. Incredibly beautiful work otherwise :)

user
Opacus (Level 7 Ichikyu) at 11/3/2010 10:30:21 AM

I have to admit that your style usually does little for me, but this is just slick.

user
FlyingMonkey (Level 1 Rookie) at 11/3/2010 7:45:37 AM

...Wow.  I'm Gobsmacked!

user
Erico (Level 1 Rookie) at 11/3/2010 5:39:48 AM

love the colors

user
SpaceSalmon (Level 1 Rookie) at 11/3/2010 1:50:11 AM

Okay, sorry I deleted my comment. I just don't like the ferret so much. His body bends sorta strange way and what's behind his legs I can't read, or it's the boots that make it. I suck at critism so don't mind me. I think the piece would look better without the ferret in it. :)

user
Losm (Level 5 Killer Klown) at 11/2/2010 8:14:40 PM

Can't stop looking at it... O_O

Oh, and congratulations on 99 faves! Well deserved. ^_^

user
Kaiseto (Level 6 Made) at 11/2/2010 5:39:02 PM

@ Dusty

Probably because it was one of the first things I did, and I did it right after the sky, which is heavily dithered...

user
Dusty (Level 1 Rookie) at 11/2/2010 5:36:20 PM

I've got one question, everything in this picture is smooth. Why'd you choose to dither the water, of all things?

user
Manupix (Level 11 Godfather) at 11/2/2010 3:10:02 PM

Yesss! The water is -- almost -- as good as version 1 ;D and the other little touches are nice too.

user
Kaiseto (Level 6 Made) at 11/2/2010 1:32:40 PM

@ Manupix

The smaller planet was there from the start. You might be right about the reflection. I'm of mixed feelings about it. Nevertheless, I think I'm done editing it. It has some problems (everything is going to), but all that really means is I have some thigns to kep in mind for my next big piece.

Well... one small edit. I'm going to see if I can merge the reflection with the same depth I had in the original version. I'd love to hear your comments when that goes up. Maybe you can still convince me to convert it back to its original format :p

user
Manupix (Level 11 Godfather) at 11/2/2010 1:21:30 PM

About your edit and some comments:

I don't think the reflections on water are an improvement. They are pretty much unrealistic (the water would have to be unnaturaly still) and more importantly, the former version had much more depth and subtlety in that light on water, that was progressively apparent to the viewer and contrasted nicely with the fg planes. It was as if you saw some distant things through a kind of round hole, and it felt right. No longer so.

I wouldn't change the sword, so as not to distract the eye from the main highlight area.

The face highlights are an improvement.

Now that they've been brought to attention, I agree that the stomach and legs 'salad' are a bit confusing, although in no way disturbing.

Also, it's possible that the smaller planet is a distraction. Not sure.

user
dya2k (Level 5 Soldier) at 11/2/2010 12:43:58 PM

This is pixel art. Thanks for showing us a piece like this.

user
dpixel (Level 9 Vice President) at 11/2/2010 12:39:15 PM

Really nice work.  Especially enjoyed the WIP gif.  It's very refreshing to see so much detail in the foreground...It really puts the lake into perspective.  Spectacular lighting too.  This peice has it all.

user
Kaiseto (Level 6 Made) at 11/2/2010 11:17:13 AM

@Cure

Check the WIP shots in the comment below. The hips are there. I think the clothes have the unfortunate quality of obscuring the correct form of the body, so people are assuming that he's supposed to be standing upright, on plantigrade legs.

user
Kaiseto (Level 6 Made) at 11/2/2010 11:12:08 AM

@iLKke (had to look up how to capitalize that... again)

Those are entirely the legs. He doesn't stand plantigrade, he stands digitigrade. Here are some shots from the WIP. that's not "salady stuff", it's still part of the pants. You'll notice that around halfway in, I was all like "This pose is boring. I'm going to try to make it more dynamic!". That's where most of the problems came from.

You've got a good point about the browns. I did thebackground before they became part of the palette. I might update some things to include them, but I think I'm done editing it for now. I'll make a point of trying to get the whole palette decided before I finish a piece next time :p

user
jazcks (Level 5 Killer Klown) at 11/2/2010 8:48:06 AM

stunning work!

wow...rubs eyes in disbelief...still there, I guess its real.  Great job.

user
antymattar (Level 2 Kukyu) at 11/2/2010 4:07:54 AM

 epic...

user
iLKke (Level 8 Guerrilla) at 11/2/2010 4:07:00 AM

Woderful.

Only thing I'd add is some more color variety in the bg. For example you could have used some of those browns on the ground here and there.

Oh, also, the legs are a bit troublesome. The leg in the back seems bent forward, and the space between the legs is filled with some dark salad thingie instead of part of the lake showing through.

Nevertheless, a stunning piece!

user
naresh (Level 1 Gangster) at 11/2/2010 3:04:04 AM

great job buddy.......................

perfect!

user
cure (Level 11 General) at 11/1/2010 10:29:46 PM

I agree with Randommonkies, the sword does get a bit lost. He also seems to have a point about the lack of hips.

Great piece regardless, the work you've put in definitely shows.

user
Randommonkies (Level 5 Assistant Manager) at 11/1/2010 10:01:53 PM

impressive peice!

I see the same issue that Dawnbringer is raising about the stomach area though, I think what it is is that there is no real hip anatomy, his body seems to kind of just flow into the left leg. Also, maybe try to highlight the sword a bit or elongate it into the dirt area just so it doesn't get lost in the details of the plants.

I really like the rocks/dirt you've done!

user
Dashspeed (Level 1 Rookie) at 11/1/2010 8:34:25 PM

SO COOL!!

user

HOLY ***.. this is mind blowing! I love every pixel of it. instant fav from the preview!

user
Kaiseto (Level 6 Made) at 11/1/2010 6:09:57 PM

@Dawnbringer

I see your point about the clothes coloring. Unfortunately, I forced myself to do it in under 24 colors, so I kind of had to stick with what I had :p I'll totally add some highlights to the eyes and nose though. I just updated the water a bit too.

user
DawnBringer (Level 10 Maniac) at 11/1/2010 5:39:13 PM

Beautiful work and a lovely palette. Although the stomach area is a little confusing...not sure what I'm looking at.

Perhaps some delicate complimentary coloring of the clothes can lift the character out of the bg a bit, and why not some highlights on the nose and eyes from the glow? imgur.com/97Kd5.png <-- Couldn't help myself fooling around, sorry! ;)

user
Delicious (Level 8 Guerrilla) at 11/1/2010 4:57:19 PM

Ah, I seen this on deviantart a week ago! Glad you submitted it here. ;)

Looks very nice. Definitely your best piece.

Awesome.  Just plain awesome.

user
Kaiseto (Level 6 Made) at 11/1/2010 4:09:23 PM

@ Ambient

. . . That.... how did I not even think of that? I wasn't going to update this piece at all, but now I might have to, because that is TOO good an idea to waste. Just need to see if I can do it without using any more colors.

user
Ambient (Level 5 Captain) at 11/1/2010 4:05:06 PM

Wonderful work. My only thought is to make the planet reflect in the water.

kudos, pretty much impressive work. :-)

user
rafaelventura (Level 1 Jukyu) at 11/1/2010 2:22:36 PM

Hey, man! It's really great!

I only think that the foreground and the background look like they're almost on the same plane. Maybe if you lighten up the foreground a little, add some highlights on the plants to the left, or tone down the background... Also, i think the character waist is a bit off on his right side, with the leg looking like it's smaller than it is. Maybe it has to do with the angle of the short.

But hey, it's just these little things. Amazing job on the details and character. Keep up the excellent work!

user
Jim16 (Level 7 Sheriff) at 11/1/2010 2:10:49 PM

So beautiful. Everything is so detailed and vibrant, yet it doesn't take the magnificence away from the character . Very well balanced and one of my favorites this year.

user
Hiuru (Level 5 Killer Klown) at 11/1/2010 2:03:51 PM

woah! Amazing job :)

user
Ninja Crow (Level 3 Private Eye) at 11/1/2010 1:46:09 PM

This is one of the most beautiful things I've ever seen, in any medium!

But I think that being pixel art definitely improves how it would otherwise look.

Maybe you won't mind some day making a list of all the things you've seen and done that have allowed you to create something like this (it would be as informative as any tutorial) -- although the impenetrable veil of mystery helps the illusion of god-like powers, for sure.

Very inspiring.  :)

user

Cap clap clap! Bravo! the best Pixelart of this year ^^ thanks!!

user
Kaiseto (Level 6 Made) at 11/1/2010 12:42:41 PM

@SpaceSalmon

That would be my attempt at forshortening. I'm not great at it. Don't suppose you could provide more than "it's weird" though? Also, our left of the character's left?

Edit: Hey, you didn't have to get rid of your comment. If you think there's something off about it and can elaborate I'm glad to hear it. I may not get around to fixing this piece in particular, but it's always good to have things in mind for future endeavors.
