The floor is a little startling, but it looks great! I want to jump in and start playing.
Do you mind if I steal some aspects of this idea to make an actual game, you can help if you want. :)
This is looking good, though I'd try another color instead of the black in the rocks, the contrast with the white makes them distracting.
I agree with Ellian. The trunk should be lit with a more cylindrical form, and I think there's a darker color between black and the gray of the rock that you could use to lower the contrast (or otherwise darken the colors that are there). Otherwise, I like the style of the characters. Great job!
I get that you're using the NES palette, but I think the colors are too garish (the trees and rock floor especially). Still, this is neat. I would play a game like this. I like your characters. I encourage you to do some animations.

The dead trunk looks kinda dull compared to everything else, but this is really nice. The rocks really stand out, and the playable characters are really readable... nice work!
