I played the beta of the original version for a bit about two years back. Thought it was pretty dull, but then again I don't care much for MMOs in the first place. I'll agree that the character customization is impressive, though.

It is no longer possible to select the NES mode option, but you can still trigger it by adding 't=8' to the URL like in the first link. I've updated the second link to include it as well.

It's cool that they even added sprites for various landmarks. I just wish they'd used a proper NES palette for Street View.

newGuy: Depends on the codec you use. There are some lossless codecs out there but I don't know how widely used they are. One example is the TSCC codec, which is used in these recordings on Pixelation.
