you shoulda put it as 3 colours because black is not a colour, anyways great use of RGB im wondering if theres a way to make something using HSL, which " yes this doesn't even make sense" :P

japez (Level 1 Depressed) at 5/13/2008 12:23:23 AM

Fel (Level 4 Ensign) at 12/20/2007 8:50:18 AM
Amazing piece of art, the concept of it only being 4 colors that are otherwise thought to be totally incompatible with eachother is mind-blowing.

Shonoby (Level 1 Intern) at 11/1/2007 8:45:35 PM
I have always loved this pixel art, i think its about time i comment on it. First of i am not gonna say this is my faviorate pixel art because well too many people say that. Either way to me this is a prime showcase of what every tech use properly can accomplish. Since i had this pixel art as my background for about two months i always look at it wether it be drunk/high or both i always examined it. After all that i saw a couple things that well just off, the right leg is sort-of wrong with his hip and his left ass check is not popping out, like if he has no bone there. I am always drawing human position and posture and trying to figure out how to draw better more life like people/positions/postures/actions/animation etc. I wont say i know what i am talking about because i am not a pro i am not credited person or what ever. You can just say i am human simply put, you don't have to fix the legs because it still looks brilliant to me but i was just putting that out there. Still its just amazing how you combine these colors in such a way and with transparent( black ), thats quite some practice; only with a year of pixeling now thats even more amazing keep making stuff like this i can learn so much from it.

A.B. (Level 6 Serial Killer) at 10/27/2007 5:25:28 AM

Random er great coloring!

The combinations of colors are pretty amazing!

Can't understand why he's naked, though.

Dr Dr0ol (Level 1 Rookie) at 10/11/2007 7:48:34 PM
random & cool!

Helm (Level 5 Detective) at 8/8/2007 6:59:45 AM
I think you should be asking yourself why is everybody else not naked with just a helmet on.

HeroMan (Level 3 Enforcer) at 8/8/2007 3:03:36 AM
I know this is kinda old, but I was just so impressed with the way that you used the colors that I completely forgot to ask myself why The Spartan was completely nude with just a helmet on. :o

hoangxiao (Level 1 Rookie) at 8/6/2007 11:04:16 PM
wow

breathingsand (Level 3 Enforcer) at 8/4/2007 1:50:19 PM

khorin (Level 1 Private) at 3/12/2007 7:34:43 AM
This IS my favorite piece in Pixeljoint. The figure is just excellent and the treatment of the limited pallette is just wonderful. If it's okay with you Helm, I'm using it as wallpaper.

InfernoMan.EXE (Level 3 Hatchikyu) at 3/8/2007 3:09:36 PM
I take a look at this piece whenever i get the chance. Its that good. Good job man!

Helm (Level 5 Detective) at 3/2/2007 9:26:05 AM

It is incredible, you have used only 4 colors!

good work, I like very much :D

PlasticOrchard (Level 1 Rookie) at 2/15/2007 10:03:50 PM
wow i like the colors

ptoing (Level 6 Made) at 2/11/2007 11:18:33 PM
Skurwy87: Helm still has to do a ORIC picture. The ORIC has truely painfull limitations.

Quait (Level 1 Gangster) at 2/10/2007 9:53:51 PM
it's like it's on an eternal bloodlust in the void after death or something.

really, really epic. :DDDD

Skurwy87 (Level 3 Stalker) at 2/5/2007 7:44:00 AM
I'm really impressed by your out-of-the-ordinary creativity and patience, (and that you still can see after starring at those colours for a long time).

So, are there any limitations you haven't broken? Or maybe, are there any left to break? :)

I'm an agnostic but that is just GODLIKE! ;)

yuritakehashi (Level 1 Rookie) at 12/27/2006 12:47:57 PM
OMG! IT'S AWESOME!

Josiah (Level 8 Marshal) at 12/18/2006 6:12:45 PM

silent sniper (Level 1 Depressed) at 12/7/2006 5:05:56 PM
i mean helm... not the spartan... oops...

silent sniper (Level 1 Depressed) at 12/7/2006 5:05:04 PM
I look at this picture and i feel like The Spartan is a god.

Soup (Level 1 Rookie) at 12/6/2006 2:04:17 PM

I look at this picture if i feel like restricting colors is a bad idea. Kick ass.

Wannahlakujuu (Level 1 Rookie) at 11/21/2006 3:39:05 PM
Wow. Helm possesses angry proficiencies.

Helm (Level 5 Detective) at 11/18/2006 10:07:51 AM
Because black is absence of color. White is not.

ryumaru (Level 3 Private Eye) at 11/17/2006 6:54:28 PM
sorry for commenting on such an old piece of yours, but what was your reasoning for not using white? it seems if your gonna use black, then white should be included.

fr0st (Level 4 Killer Klown) at 11/17/2006 7:41:09 AM
fegging awsome use of colors, 5/5++ nice one :D

seida (Level 1 Rookie) at 11/13/2006 11:24:15 AM

Waho (Level 1 Private) at 11/1/2006 6:42:22 AM

Scotteh (Level 1 Jukyu) at 10/21/2006 2:06:35 PM

Favourite? Abso****inlutely!  Awsome at only 4 colours!

That impressive...5/5 + Fav

migoy (Level 1 Rookie) at 9/8/2006 9:57:38 AM
you guys, should look closely to it, its 4( FOUR) colors i see; Red,Green,Blue and Black. Gee! its basically the hardest skill to learn in pixel art. though a bit harsh on the eyes but its great!

Helm (Level 5 Detective) at 9/4/2006 7:24:19 AM
You are mistaken, jkilla. Check again.

jkilla (Level 1 Rookie) at 9/3/2006 11:03:56 PM
jsut amazing but i count six colors blue, violet, red, black(backround),and some od green color on his upper left chest.

=^D Guy (Level 3 Enforcer) at 8/22/2006 8:14:00 PM
This be PIXEL ART OF THE GODS. Plus, even four colors? Wow.

rabidbaboy (Level 4 Shichikyu) at 8/3/2006 8:14:49 PM
That's tops.
Anyone who doubts that Pixel Art is art should only look at your works, Helm.
His left elbow (the one nearest us) looks too wide, imo.
But I understand you're through with this piece.5/5

buloght (Level 7 Sheriff) at 7/30/2006 5:44:55 AM
Scratch that, I see void is black.

buloght (Level 7 Sheriff) at 7/30/2006 5:41:13 AM
Hmm, I haven't favourited this yet. I'll fix that. I was wondering, helm, why doesn't the black count as a colour?

Awesome work again

DesertFox (Level 1 Private) at 7/29/2006 1:21:43 PM
That is awesome.

Huggkruka (Level 1 Rookie) at 7/28/2006 7:52:32 AM
But there are so many colours in there...
Wow man, GREAT work on technique.

OldSkoolLink (Level 2 Corporal) at 7/16/2006 10:26:24 PM
Holy shit...

zomby (Level 1 Quiet One) at 7/15/2006 2:43:09 PM
Very nice work. Colors look very good and make the pic even more fantastic.

NobleClock (Level 2 Corporal) at 7/14/2006 10:53:53 PM

not a very appealing pixelart, yet good techniques used. legs seem a bit out of proportion. good work.

Helm (Level 5 Detective) at 6/29/2006 8:35:00 PM
Mullet: good critique

Saboteur: I learnt a new form of dithering I never had much of a reason to use before this. It's a byproduct of the scanline thing. Ptoing started this whole deal by showing my a picture that seemed blue, by alternating 'scanlines' between two colors. After we decided that this was interesting, I had to try to use the scanlines, but also do dither gradiations into other colors without resorting to too much

XOXOXO
OXOXOX
XOXOXO

standard 50% dithering patterns, as they went against the scanline effect. Not that I didn't end up using them anyway, but not predominantly.

So what I had to figure out is this sort of 'brick dither' effect you can see if you zoom in like on the helmet or chest. It's a very subtle effect, not a lot of brightness differentiation, but adds texture, interest and doesn't mess with the scanlines too much. The big payoff is of course, tinting.

Thanks for the interest, again. I am amazed a piece such as this fared as well as it did on pixeljoint. Although it didn't seem to get any 'x of the week' award or anything.

Mullet (Level 1 Jukyu) at 6/26/2006 2:17:41 PM
Looking back, there's one spot that bothers me. His right hands thumb, the one holding the flame sword, is seperated from the sword by only a line. It looks really out place, considering how every other spot is defined using shading, but that one line is used for the division there. Pardon the pun, but it sticks out like a sore thumb.

Saboteur (Level 4 Shichikyu) at 6/26/2006 2:31:53 AM
I'm gonna assume you do everything as a learning experience, because you're fucking godly at pixel art, and that can only come through either loads of practice or some well-aimed practice. This is nuts, basically, and I have but one question:
What did you learn about dithering (or whatever) while making this piece?

Mullet (Level 1 Jukyu) at 6/23/2006 12:01:20 AM
Wow. Helm, this isn't just a great piece, it's a masterpiece. The skill it would take to do this is well beyond me, and many others. Not only is the drawing interesting, and the lighting realisitic, but the sheer technique involved into transferring such a great piece of art to pixel art, let alone with a limit of rgbv, is dumbfounding. Major props, a favorite, and 5/5!

Kennethfejer (Level 1 Jukyu) at 6/16/2006 2:08:59 PM
absolutely awesome.
cant say anything bad about this piece.
its amazing to see what you can get out of those 4 colors.

i_am_leeloo (Level 1 Rookie) at 6/16/2006 1:58:59 PM
Wow O_O
Simply amazing. I wish I could do this. <3

Wazu_is_king! (Level 1 Private) at 6/16/2006 12:10:39 AM
You are a pixel god!

me7356 (Level 4 Murderer) at 6/15/2006 2:16:41 PM
When I saw this, my pupils climaxed.

Maybe you didn't need to know that.

ptoing (Level 6 Made) at 6/14/2006 1:59:48 PM
I feel like i have to write something too. I love what you have done with the restrictions. Hope i can do something as good when i find the time to tackle this mode.

Helm (Level 5 Detective) at 6/14/2006 12:49:57 PM
Thanks again, everybody. St0ven, I am honored.

E-Magination (Level 3 Sniper) at 6/14/2006 8:50:00 AM

Yeah, the leg is awesome.

st0ven (Level 1 Intern) at 6/13/2006 11:54:12 PM
i havent had this much respect for a pixelated piece in a long time.  I can clearly see all of your techniques culminated into this fantastic work, but i think the most amazing part about this piece is the comprehension of color theory and how intimately balanced these colors can be when in close proximity to another. for some reason i am especially drawn to the leg, perhaps not only by the stronger contrast in that area, but also just the athletic, sleek musculature of the leg, it seems very much real, more so than all of the other awesome detail. The one thing that keeps popping out at me over and over though, is the bicep on the right most arm, it just seems too big given the rest of the musculature, especially in comparison to the somewhat dwarved deltoid of which it is intertwined with ;).

Nevanda (Level 1 Jukyu) at 6/13/2006 11:09:57 PM
4 colors  my sweet god...

E-Magination (Level 3 Sniper) at 6/13/2006 6:52:36 AM
Awesomeness in C64 style-ish. Nicely gradiented.

?UNKNOWN? (Level 1 Rookie) at 6/12/2006 10:32:49 PM
When you put it like that...
Yeah, I was just suggesting my dislike, but It would be awesome to see this with propper colours.
But no, keep it as it is, the skill of using horrible colours and making them look a thing of beuaty is a skill that it seems I can't appreciate fully.

ryumaru (Level 3 Private Eye) at 6/12/2006 10:01:34 PM

are you suggesting he fix them or are you just showing your dislike of them? i dont even think helm liked the colors he was using, pure red, pure blue, and pure green.

?UNKNOWN? (Level 1 Rookie) at 6/12/2006 9:01:13 PM
I know that's the point of it. I do admire how he made such ugly colours look great, -Sorry I I didn't make that clear- but that doesn't stop the fact that I don't like them.

ryumaru (Level 3 Private Eye) at 6/12/2006 7:23:07 PM

unknown, the point of this piece was to use these pure colors, doing anything else would deystroy the point of the aesthetic that helm was going for.

anyways helm, can i congratulate you on making a new form of dithering?

d-p (Level 10 Maniac) at 6/12/2006 5:20:29 PM
Probably the best one can make of these colors.

happip (Level 6 Serial Killer) at 6/12/2006 2:28:34 PM
awesome, even if the colors hurt my eyes for some reason x. x  xD

?UNKNOWN? (Level 1 Rookie) at 6/12/2006 12:55:36 PM
It's a good piece, don't get mne wrong.
But I'm the sole one that doesn't like the colours.
The first time I looked at it I got a headache. However, that may have been stress. I just personally don't like the choice of colours, no matter how effectively you've used them. But still, it is a great piece. 5/5.

CDI (Level 5 Detective) at 6/12/2006 10:32:49 AM
amazing... purely amazing... only now... can you animate it j/k

DeathByChris (Level 4 Team Leader) at 6/12/2006 10:22:00 AM
thats insanely awesome 6/6. am i the only one seeing the six dot rating ?

Aleiav (Level 2 Quiet One) at 6/12/2006 9:53:45 AM

5/5 + Fav

I absolutely love this piece. It's amazing.

Dark Rogue (Level 5 Rokkyu) at 6/12/2006 6:52:34 AM

The helmet reminds me of the mithril/elven helmets on Oblivion...

All of the other good comments have already been said, so I remain speechless.
