Pixel Joint - About Us

Pixel Joint Revealed

Pixel Joint is all about the pixel art community. The site was started in September 2004 by the rogue pixeller sedgemonkey, but the tools were not in place to submit pixel art until December 7, 2004. Since the site has opened to submissions the gallery has grown steadily, a forum was opened and a couple of collaborative projects (The Joint and Lil Dudes) were given homes.

Here are some of the whack jobs who helped make the site what it is today...
sedgemonkey   (Level 10 Master Sniper :: 37269 points)
Luke Sedgeman from Woodland Hills, CA, United States
Joined the team Wednesday, August 08, 2001

Like many other pixel art fanactics, sedgemonkey's love of the pixel was rooted in the glory days of 8 and 16 bit Nintendo/Sega console games and the arcade classics of the late 80s and 90s. Sedgemonkey didn't really start pixelling until around January 2004, but quickly became obsessed with creating a site to showcase all the different pixel artists out there -- Pixel Joint. With his pixel work done, sedgemonkey is roaming the country aimlessly seeking shelter in dumpsters, convenience store bathrooms, doghouses and the occasional militia compound.

Ripped Monkey   (Level 1 Intern :: 380 points)
Brian Shields from Ventura, CA, United States
Joined the team Thursday, August 09, 2001

Ripped Monkey, Ph.D. spent his entire childhood in Muslim schools, and earned a doctorate degree in Islamic history and culture from Al-Azhar University in Cairo, Egypt. After his conversion to Christianity, his family disowned him, and tried several times to kill him. He escaped his Muslim homeland and eventually settled in the United States, where he chose a Christian name to reflect his new life in Christ. He is the author of Islam and Terrorism and Islam and the Jews.

the_keller   (Level 1 Rookie :: 1336 points)
Kel Davies from Irvine, CA, United States
Joined the team Monday, May 17, 2004

The_keller has always loved art in all its forms, but he was never very good at actually creating it. He just likes to collect things and bury them in his yard. He has 200+ anime DVDs, 3000+ comic books and 30K+ art pieces collected on his computer and a massive collection of games and systems (Atari 2600, Nintendo, Sega Master System, Sega Genesis, Sega CD, SNES, Atari Jaguar, TurboGrafx, Nintendo 64, Atari Lynx, Nintendo 64, Playstation 2, XBox, Gamecube, Gameboy Advance, PSP). He can out-nerd any nerd for sure.

pixelblink   (Level 8 Marshal :: 9290 points)
Steve Larabie from Vancouver, Canada
Joined the team Wednesday, November 24, 2004

Pixelblink hails from Vancouver, BC, Canada, Earth. Since around mid-2002, he's been pixelling his way around the web in search of a place he could call home. He puts back into the community everything he has learned to try and spread the love to the masses. PixelJoint is now home to his sexy pixels and his mindless rantings.

Pixelblink is also a PJ administrator and helps organize collabs and contests from time to time.

iSTVAN   (Level 8 Cannibal :: 11315 points)
Ivan Dixon from Newcastle, Australia
Joined the team Wednesday, December 08, 2004

Starting life in the slums of rural Australia, Ivan Dixon (better known as 'iSTVAN'), began his humble career as a Kliker; creating games and graphics to be distributed over the internet during the late nineties. With ever a keen eye for art, iSTVAN found his true passions lay in the graphical aspects of game making -- namely pixel art. He quickly rose in the pixel ranks to his current position of internet stardom which he is prone to profess loudly as an icebreaker, when introducing himself to people at parties. Ivan also enjoys watching tv, movies, and arguing. He's created many games and worked on a number of comedy based comics. His dog's name is Indy.

Ensellitis   (Level 11 Special Agent :: 28173 points)
Chris Ensell from Kansas City, MO, United States
Joined the team Sunday, June 19, 2005

My name is Ensellitis (In sell eye tiss). Yes, I know it sounds like a disease, that is because it is suppose to. I am like a disease, hence the name... Got it?

Pixeling is not all I do. I also do vector, photo manipulations, photography, digital drawings, painting, sketching, tattooing, coding (yes, I consider coding an art form), video editing... I consider myself well rounded...

I am a rather "grungy" person. I wear cheap clothes that are faded, ripped, and stained. I have had the same hat for 10 years that i still wear all the time. I shave maybe once every 2 weeks, and my hair hasnt been combed since I was 12. However, since I am an artist, this is considered ok...

I'm not a racist or bigot, but I love to tell really to tell bigoty jokes because I love to make people feel uncomfortable. Nothing makes me happier than playing mind games. I am very well trained in human psychology, and I love to use that to my advantage.

I am a self admitted asshole. Don't take it personally, I am an ass to everyone. I can be an asshole to you one minute, and seem like your best friend the next, thats just how I play, hommie.

Btw, 1 pixel at 100dpi is 0.00826771654 inches, tell your mommy, she would like to know that.

I'm terrible at writing about myself...

I've been doing pixel art causally for I guess three years or more. I don't actually remember when I started, though my first major pixel art project was a set of fruit, vegetable and animal characters that I created for my mini shop on Gaiaonline.com.

Pixel art is my current obsession, though I work in a variety of other styles and media, including digital painting, acrylics, coloured pencil, ink, photography, sculpture, costume creation, pencil, watercolour etc etc.

I'm a graphic designer and web designer by trade, and I also do some book illustration on the side. I'm currently in my last year of college in the Multimedia program.

My original internet art venture was creating a large collection of Sailormoon hentai pieces, several hundred over the course of about three years.

I don't know what else about me people might find interesting or relevant. If you're curious, just ask.

Pixel Joint Thanks

We here at Pixel Joint could never have made this site click without the daily efforts of the PJ members and admins and we really appreciate it. There's about a ga-jillion other people we'd like to thank for helping track down bugs, providing content, submitting pixel art and just generally cool people who post cool comments. You know who you are.

We would like to specifically thank...
Blueberry_pie
For creating (most of) the pixel art smilies we use in the WYSIWYG editor and on the forum.
Dynamic Drive
For the super simple drop down menu code in the navigation which works flawlessly across all modern browsers. I've been visiting it for years for JavaScript ideas.
FCKeditor
For the wonderful cross-browser (IE, FireFox, Netscape, Mozilla), Open Source WYSIWYG (What You See Is What You Get) editor that has really allowed the content tools of PJ to be accessible to everyone.
iSTVAN
For creating the 'nerd' in the default PJ web design.
Peppermint Pig
For his original Pixel Joint design revisions and his tireless dedication to the pixel art community in general.
pixelblink
For his amazing work on 'The Joint', icon packs, screensaver, tutorials and his efforts at trying to keep the PJ forum from falling into complete disarray.
samson
For his help keeping the Wee project alive (and for creating 150+ kick ass Wees).
ThePixelChick
For her fun little Flash memory game.
Web Wiz Forums
For the only decent ASP forum solution. Hopefully version 8 will make it even more 'decent'.
