Not a great deal of creativity in this piece (this will be my next project)
but I`m pleased with how it has come out all the same. I tried to give it
a bit more of a hand-painted feel though as apposed to making a straight
copy.

All drawn using just a single pixel brush in 16 colours in Pro-Motion.

Here's a link to the WIP animated GIF;
http://i86.photobucket.com/albums/k118/AndyOaks_2006/SarahBrightmanPortraitWIP.gif

And here's a picture of my reference (although I didn't draw from this
actual .jpg. I drew it from the inlay of the album);

Stunning work really realistic !

user
cirras (Level 1 Rookie) at 6/15/2012 11:15:00 PM

Fantastic. The dithering makes everything so smooth. Doesn't even look pixeled.

user
Yielmo (Level 4 Lieutenant) at 4/26/2012 4:35:00 AM

 Holy moley....

user
clefairykid (Level 6 SWAT) at 2/27/2012 4:23:00 PM

I think this is amazing! Great work making it so smooth and realistic with only 16 colours <3

user
AirStyle (Level 4 Team Leader) at 2/13/2012 12:36:00 AM

It all depends on what your style is. Some people enjoy that of photorealism, such as I. Others may PA strictly for style, or a stylized approach, as do I as well. I enjoy this piece because I enjoy realism. I also enjoy some of the more stylized pieces, such as that of Jinn and his pieces.

user
Super17 (Level 6 Serial Killer) at 1/24/2012 7:43:00 AM

What's the point of pixeling photorealistical from a photo? Using a reference for another aim is ok I think, but this is just a copy. No doubt that the artist has very good skills and this is masterfully done for sure, but I will never understand why people adore something like this.

user
Brutown (Level 1 Rookie) at 1/20/2012 2:03:00 PM

 16 Collors ? Realissstttiicccc !!

user
PixelGremlin (Level 1 Rookie) at 9/7/2011 12:11:00 PM

I would have said you used indexed colour on PS, but this is better. The fact it's done by hand makes it even more remarkable. Absolutely stunning, one of the best pieces I've ever seen.

user
Gugaknie (Level 5 Soldier) at 8/1/2011 8:08:00 AM

user
Sol Seraph (Level 1 Rookie) at 1/11/2011 9:30:00 AM

It's art like this that makes me want to learn how to draw in pixels. The sheer realism is amazing, and it's even more impressive knowing it's all done in tiny dots!

It rocks. Keep up the good work!

The WIP animation says otherwise.

user
JJoploo (Level 1 Gangster) at 10/18/2009 6:55:00 PM

Shut up, there's no why this is a pixel art. You must have reduced the colors on a picture of something. O.O

user
Moskau (Level 2 Quiet One) at 9/21/2009 8:36:00 AM

This is one of the most amazing artworks I have ever seen.

user

user

user

Woah, that looked like a photograph at first! D: 5/5, for sure!

user
verfum (Level 3 Private Eye) at 5/6/2009 3:36:00 PM

Another comment has been made (jedzed) about anti-aliassed work looking 'photoshopped', which made me think...
When I started 'pixelling' in the late '80s, systems such as the Amiga and their rich pallette became a boon for artists, allowing 'antialiasing' to give the effect of straighter edges, and other effects. We used it constantly; and for this early period many of us didn't look back, less try to emulate the 'raw' limits of older 8-bit systems' graphics restrictions.
It's interesting as time has moved on we see more-and-more pixelled styles revert to the non-antialiased (aliased?) styles that artists had no choice but to use, but now use in anger - Metal Slug being the obvious example.
Do we think anti-aliassed work today, a technique that could once only be produced meticulously and skillfully by hand, has a lesser credibility now that such a technique (cheat?) is the bread-and-butter of modern art tools - even tools that are meant purely for pixel art?
Just a thought :P

user
jedzed (Level 2 Flatfoot) at 2/5/2009 8:39:00 AM
just looks like a photoshopped picture to me, i could do it easy without the fuss of hand pixelling it, if you did really do that. since i think itd be easy to make a backwards wip from that lol

user

So smooth, this is amazing, you win 100%

user
FlyGuy (Level 10 Capo) at 3/19/2008 9:56:00 AM
I honestly don't understand why this is not the number one piece on Pixel Joint. You have easily fooled the eye into believing this is a black and white photo of a beautiful woman. I even had some buddies of mine look at this, they were all fooled. Th detail in the hair is jaw dropping, you really have major talent....I hope it's being used some where else as well, (where more people can see).

And you know, the funny thing is...You actually made her prettier than she really is! Fav 7/7.

user
SillyJonna (Level 2 Kukyu) at 2/11/2008 1:41:00 AM
Goodness! The skin is so smooth and lovely, as well as the hair! An amazing piece.

user
ebby (Level 1 Rookie) at 8/23/2006 3:12:00 PM
great work! the bottom lip and eyes are extremely well pixelled!

user
AndyOaks (Level 1 Rookie) at 8/23/2006 1:28:00 PM

You're right,  that jawbone area is a bit on the rough side. I`ll take another look at it.

Thanks for your help eghost.

user
eghost (Level 6 Hitman) at 8/23/2006 12:40:00 PM
The dither pattern on the near side where it transitions from highlight to jawbone curvature is a bit rough, giving that portion a somewhat fuzzy texture...Also on the near side right under the lip it feels like the dither pattern extends down about a pixel or two too far...

user
AndyOaks (Level 1 Rookie) at 8/23/2006 12:27:00 PM

Well spotted with the far side of the face. I hadn't noticed that but you're right it does appear a bit flat.

Could you give me some pointers on the dithering that could do with some cleaning up. I`ll sort this out whilst I'm fixing the far side of the face.

thanks for your comments.

user
Afflict (Level 4 Lieutenant) at 8/23/2006 12:21:00 PM
Unbelievable! 5/5 and fav great work AndyOaks

user
eghost (Level 6 Hitman) at 8/23/2006 9:35:00 AM
Very nice dither work, though some of it could be cleaner. Specifically on the near side of the jawline...My only real complaint regarding this piece is that her face appears very flat on the far side, though it appears that way in the photo as well...Simply amazing work on the hair btw...

user
verfum (Level 3 Private Eye) at 8/23/2006 9:28:00 AM
