Here's an assortment of background scenes from the new demo of my horror platformer, entitled Curses!  You can play the one-stage demo now, and pretty soon we'll have the full thirteen-stage game up and running. I worked particularly hard on the grass and dirt tiles, and the big spooky forest tile. The houses and church re-use a lot of parts, and they're based on reference photos of old buildings in the French countryside.

my favorite is the last with the werewolf

ProgZmax (Level 1 Jukyu) at 12/11/2008 4:26:44 PM
I love the color usage and values here, they set the atmosphere perfectly.  Is that green skeleton appearing in front of the the splash, though, or is it just me?

Great work!  I look forward to seeing the finished product.
5/5

Thanks neokat! That's some mighty high praise. I can't wait to get back to work on this project.

neokat (Level 1 Rookie) at 12/5/2008 7:14:03 PM
dude, its like evil dead meets ghost and goblins. that rocks so hard.

b2k (Level 5 Killer Klown) at 2/14/2008 3:21:48 PM
please do a loading sequence for the game.

greenraven (Level 8 Cannibal) at 11/14/2007 5:32:46 PM
That looks pretty awesome.

pixeljockey (Level 1 Rookie) at 3/25/2007 11:00:33 AM

ManningKrull (Level 9 Executioner) at 11/16/2006 6:16:16 AM
Thanks! Right now we're planning on making it a free online game.

Aramax (Level 1 Rookie) at 11/14/2006 9:05:57 AM

Good game. Will it be free or pay to play...

Mrmo Tarius (Level 3 Enforcer) at 11/9/2006 11:54:02 AM
I like the compositions... the cow carcass adds... uh, *something* to the scene :)
Going to try the demo now...

Thanks! Jumping control is the number one thing we're working on enhancing for the real game. I was trying to keep it oldschool, like with NES/Castlevania-style jumping (i.e. no control in the air), but lots of people have asked for more control, so we're already working on that.

My friend Patrick is coding the whole game in Flash. I'm designing all the artwork in Photoshop and making animated gifs of all the monsters' actions in ImageReady, and then I just e-mail everything to Patrick and he does the rest, with both of us exchanging hundreds of e-mails with our ideas about movement, speed, gameplay, etc.

Awesome art throughout that little. I have to say though, I found the gameplay left a lot to be desired. All of the enemies were simply one hit-kill-them-before-they-run-into-you apart from the hanging skeletons, which were a nice touch, but occasionally did not throw their apples (no idea why). Providing a different challenge for each of the enemies other than fastest-finger first would be a great benefit. The jumping control was weird, you can only jump straight up or at one particular direction (as has been mentioned), which is not very intuitive so a bit more fluidity would help here. I know it's only the first level but it'd help so much to make this play good because it looks so fantastic...

How are you making it by the way?

ManningKrull (Level 9 Executioner) at 10/21/2006 9:15:54 AM
Yeah, some of the monsters were made before we even decided to do a game, but the cow was specifically thought up to be one of the werewolf's victims.

O_o, so that was what the dead cow and maggots were for, this game...

Sohashu (Level 7 Sheriff) at 10/19/2006 2:45:48 AM
PLease add control in the air.  Loved the graphics though.  Fav'd.

Sohashu (Level 7 Sheriff) at 10/19/2006 2:39:13 AM
Pretty cool.  The sprite work on this is pretty good.  I just think you should lower he contrast on the dirt, clouds, and grass.

Mykola (Level 2 Flatfoot) at 10/18/2006 10:03:15 AM

Maaaan can't wait for the full version

ptoing (Level 7 Underboss) at 10/18/2006 8:36:37 AM
I played the game a bit and i have to say the controls are very unresposive. Adding control while in air would help A LOT. Getting on the treestumps lateron was really a pain in the ass.
Please don't ruin this potentially awesome game!!!

ceddo (Level 6 Serial Killer) at 10/18/2006 6:30:25 AM
Awesome work!!! The game is awesome. I love the style of everything, and it's challenging enough. Favved and 5'ed.

ManningKrull (Level 9 Executioner) at 10/18/2006 6:00:35 AM
Thanks, everybody! These comments about the art and gameplay are extremely helpful. Imagician, I understand your uncertainlty about leaving so many critiques, but I really do appreciate all of them.

Godslayer (Level 2 Corporal) at 10/18/2006 4:37:20 AM
Cant wait to play the game.

maloART (Level 5 Killer Klown) at 10/17/2006 11:26:57 PM

I am speechless ... This is excellent. I really like the atmosphere of the game. I do agree with Imagician's C&C.

Your style fits perfectly with the game.

Huggkruka (Level 1 Rookie) at 10/17/2006 10:36:31 PM
Played the demo. Really neat! Needs some more music maybe(in the same style though) and possibly a checkpoint in the middle of the map, or at least when you've reached the boss. Otherwise it was really cool! Looking forward to the whole thing.

Huggkruka (Level 1 Rookie) at 10/17/2006 10:30:33 PM
Wow, those buildings are flawless. The ground looks perfect as well. Mind if I steal a few tricks?

jalonso (Level 11 Godfather) at 10/17/2006 9:43:38 PM
Awesome graphics. 13 levels, genious.

The B.O.B. (Level 11 Master Assassin) at 10/17/2006 7:24:15 PM
I also feel the same as Imagician about the issue with the clouds and moon, and also feel that the x, z key controls should be switched to feel just a wee bet comfy...the animation's are great, and I personally dig the colorful houses in the background. Too groovy for words...

Imagician (Level 3 Hatchikyu) at 10/17/2006 6:29:36 PM
Sorry for the doublepost, I forget to mention some more things that I noticed :

  • The demo uses double-pixels. However, there is a "shift" of 1 single pixel in the area where the game is played. You can tell it by the one-only pixel at the left and right border and by the shift relating to the red framed interface area. I would regard this as some kind of "goof".
  • The score popping up from some objects is not "double-pixeled" (not yet, I guess)
  • Using X and Y for jumping/fighting feels a little annoying with a keyboard (maybe that will be configurable in the final game?)
I hope this doesn't feel misplaced, since this should be a discussion about the picture only and not the game, probably... Did I already mention that I rellay love the concept of the game ? The idea about getting the curses is really kind of inventive and funny to me...

Imagician (Level 3 Hatchikyu) at 10/17/2006 6:09:35 PM
I have been watching your posting for a while (the monsters and animations you started posting some time ago) and I was really fond of it from the start. So, don't misunderstand my critics - I really like this stuff, though here are some suggestions/comments:

  • The clouds in the game move slower than the moon when you're walking. I think, that it should be the other way around (because the moon is farther away - it should be nearly stationary)
  • The clouds should move by themselves more or less slowly in one direction with different speed (caused by the wind)
  • Your sky is one-color. There should be a slight gradient (lighter at the bottom). It looks nicer, accents the mountains at the horizon some more and adds some mood.
  • There should be lightning in the sky sporadically (just by putting a lighter-colored skypattern there for a fraction of a second, not by putting real lightning-bolts there. At the same time, all the foreground (that is, all the rest) should be darkened a little for the moment of the lightning for adding some realistic optical effect)
  • The bottom line of the grass (where grass and soil meet) looks a little to straight to me. Maybe there should be a little more "fuzzyness".
  • Some more "moody lighting" would be adorable. Maybe some "reflection" of the green-yellow moonlight at the sides of the trees (both sides, that is).
Maybe I'll do a little make-over of your picture to visualize a little better the points I just tried to make. Forgive me, if some (or even all) of the mentioned stuff has already been mentioned by you or someone else or is already in the planning

Freakin' amazing. I particularly like the scarecrow, I saw that while looking at your site.

milkyjon (Level 4 Murderer) at 10/17/2006 4:46:48 PM
Yeah looks great. Cant find any flaws worth mentioning about the graphics. The Characters stand out really well. Tree tile must have taken you ages but it looks real good, my fav bit of the level infact. Slight paralex scroll was nice and overall plays fairly well apart from its biggest flaw in my opinion not being able to turn mid air for more accurate landings. Definately reminds me of the all time greatest Ghols and Ghosts tho, which is no bad thing. Keep up the good work, I'll be eagerly awaiting the latest update when it arrives. Oh yeah favd as well.

ptoing (Level 7 Underboss) at 10/17/2006 3:41:25 PM
Looks like this will be fun, hope you get it done. If not i have to send my zombies after you >:0
