I know this has been up for a long time, but I just want to say that the preview does not do this piece justice :D This is nice, well done.

For some reason this reminds me heavily of La-Mulana.
I love La-Mulana, so I definately love this piece too :)

mrduke (Level 1 Rookie) at 11/21/2006 12:41:08 PM

Great work! If I were you I would put in some more black forground to "frame in" the picture a little more...ex a tree branch etc...

Shaffa (Level 1 Private) at 11/20/2006 12:23:40 PM

the 80's colors are back for more! haha!

this piece made my day!

Tadashi Blossom (Level 1 Rookie) at 11/18/2006 8:00:13 PM

Your colour usage is not only outstanding, but highly innovative as well. Cheers!

Lovely indeed.  You, sir, are among my favorite pixelartists.

"any reason why on the temple, the highlights were made on the same tile, and not on the tile above? making it impossible for a very possible extra shade?"
I...hadn't thought about it that way, well spotted.  I'll have to keep it in mind for the next piece!  The way I did it just made intuitive sense to me.

about highlights: I'd actually tried an approach similar to rymaru's but with less satisfactory results.  I decided to keep straight silhouettes though because the whole concept for this piece was to have different 'types' of pixelling on different layers, like all that diagonal tile-junk in the forest, smoother surfaces on the temple, and dithering in the clouds.  I ended up getting lazy by the time I got to the clouds so there's not as much dithering as I intended, and some of that diagonal hatching crept into the temple, but that's the general theory at least.  I think the highlights would work, but it's not for me.  Maybe in the alternate universe.

Bah hah! So there is hope..

thats basically a nit pick but this is totally great! highlights on the guys is definitely possible though:

The architecture could use some work to make it more interesting, but I applaud you and this piece.

Skull (Level 11 CEO) at 11/14/2006 2:08:44 PM
Wonderful work, the style works incredibly well.

Omegavolt (Level 2 Petty Officer) at 11/14/2006 1:37:43 PM
I am envious of those who arent afraid to stray from standard colors.  Its something I have to work on heavily myself.  The fact that you used such a wide ranges of hues on the temple and still make it look so seamless is amazing.  And green clouds???  I never would have in a million years, but you aced it.  Brilliant work.

ptoing (Level 6 Made) at 11/14/2006 12:56:51 PM
Took you some time to upload this :) Cool beans.

Very spectacular.  I almost can't believe that it follows restrictions.  The silouhette is a great touch.

sedgemonkey (Level 10 Master Sniper) at 11/14/2006 12:28:43 PM
I have to say I'm a giant fan of the c64 art and it's because of terrific pieces like this.

The B.O.B. (Level 11 Master Assassin) at 11/14/2006 12:20:22 PM
I know, but a man could only hope that he would cheat just a wee bit...still awesome none the less.

Filax_666 (Level 6 Hitman) at 11/14/2006 12:10:50 PM
OMFG Lackey I love you. The way you mixed the blocky stuff with dithering is awesome. I love it.

@BOB: What you suggested about the warriors is probably impossible due to restrictions :/

Mirre (Level 6 Serial Killer) at 11/14/2006 12:05:39 PM
This is absolutely lovely! I really like how you managed to put so much detail into the characters in the foreground. And the sky looks great as well! It's a great piece, it feels very serene and summer-ish/medeterranian.

The B.O.B. (Level 11 Master Assassin) at 11/14/2006 11:46:45 AM
Not a fan of C64 art, if I say so myself. But this is beautiful. I love the effects you made with the "diagonal-type-brush" dithering of the bushes in the lower right corner. The temple's rendering is also very nice. I can't think of anything to crit at the moment, other than maybe, Juusssttt maaaayybe, giving a small hint of light reflecting off the tribal warriors. Wonderful piece, in my eyes.

bilbofrodotolkien (Level 2 Hired Gun) at 11/14/2006 11:45:43 AM
wow an epic scene! a great work with just a few colors, where did you find inspiration.
