Secret santa gift at Pixelation for Toby. Thought I'd submit this as my last online picture of 2006.

Haven't played any of the games, so I had to rely on what little reference I could find. Had to use a somwhat jaggy laptop mouse, so the rocky texture worked to my advatige I guess. The picture ended up on Joystiq after being on Digg, so you might have seen it there already. No matter though. Here it is again :P It's msPaint by the way.

Happy New Year everybody!

Mr.Derogative (Level 1 Private) at 8/18/2010 12:27:48 PM

I have quite a few things to say about this piece, all of them positive. The reason why the following points I am about to make are all positive is because I have been unable to find one flaw, one negatory aspect, or even a single imperfection. I'd like to start off with saying that this piece has imaculate texture work, every element involved in this scene is not only believable but incredibly well illustrated. The negative, open space, and perspective all play together very well, right down to the clouds looming which appear to be centered towards the katamari, the towering crags in the distance, and the katamari itself. The proportion is also one of the things that I liked best; when looking these two massive creatures curled up against this giant ball right next to this very small man wielding a sword, it makes for an interesting scenario. It's very clear to me that you've put immense amount of effort into this, and it baffles me how much detail and thought could be put into one work of art, not to mention every other piece you've made. I think it's fair to put just enough effort into this review as you put into your art, but unfortunately words alone cannot fully express how I feel.

user
zero57 (Level 1 Depressed) at 6/20/2010 9:54:30 AM

Awesome! One thing though.... is it just me? Or is the colossal body on top is a bit weird? I mean look at the top colossal, the legs go down and the left foot are a little crooked. And the body, when u go up and look at the top's colossal head; It looks like the upper body rotated around while the lower body is normal. (Except for the foot)

To sum it up in small words. Look at the colossal on top closely. It looks a bit weird doesn't it?

user

whoa if this was done in paint I feel even more inadequate

user
QuaziGNRLnose (Level 1 Rookie) at 8/13/2009 5:05:25 PM

it is monotone to be fair so 15 colours is quite a large palette, he only really uses 5 or 6 on the most detailed stuff so it is still incredible

user
inphy (Level 4 Deputy) at 8/6/2009 1:17:16 PM

Excellent idea, excellent execution. The palette, the details, the lines, the textures - just great. Inspiring and educational. :)

this is gorgeous! it must have been painstaking work on MSPaint! XD trust me i know, i've done stuff on there too. ^^

i love love love how well you captured the textures and how the shadows bend because of the curved surface and the chipped gears, and...

well, i could go on. ^^ again, very lovely work.

Dr D (Level 2 Kukyu) at 5/10/2009 7:40:01 PM

I'm pretty sure this is not a rip. Snake is an extremely great artist, and doesn't often forget to show WIP steps and so, as you can see in his other works.

I don't have any reason to believe this is a rip.

This Alberto guy uploaded this image in 2008, it was submitted here in 2006. Not to mention, it has worse quality. You can see specks if you closely examine the smooth-ball part of katamari. Alberto also doesn't seem to do too much pixel art, this would be a step out into what may be a new medium.

If it was stolen, it wouldn't be the first time, a quick google search would show that.

But who knows, and, who's to say that Snake isn't Alberto as well. (Going by the folder name, btw.)

But whoever made it sure made something excellent.

Is that his? Otherwise, it's a rip.. which = R.I.P.

Refresh my memory...who is that?

user
Breton Slivka (Level 2 Kukyu) at 5/4/2009 12:43:32 AM

To be clear that wasn't meant to be a criticism of you, really. You can't argue with success. I'm just reacting to the people who think this artwork is awesome *because* it was made in MS Paint, and not really taking notice of things like color, composition, figure ground relationship, balance, line, tone structure or anything else that actually matters to whether something is aesthetically pleasing or not.  You could have built the image up using punch cards for all I care. What bothers me is people impressed by the process rather than result.

That's not to say that process can't be interesting, but I can't see the sense in congratulating someone for using the tools that they happen to like, or happen to have.

user
Wu! (Level 1 Seaman) at 5/3/2009 12:59:02 PM

awesome idea!
The texture of the collossus' are is so impressive, the stones as well.
Wow and all that three dimensionality...

incredible

user
Snake (Level 1 Rookie) at 4/30/2009 4:42:36 AM

The picture was made the way it was because my PC broke down at the time. As for using msPaint, I just enjoy using it despite having access to Photoshop CS3 and whatnot. It works for me. I've never insiunated that anyone should be impressed by this picture and quite frankly, I'm surprised how people read so much into what I basically made as a christmas gift, but if it inspires people to create more art, then I'm certainly happy about that.

For now though, I'm busy making something better.

user
joao_thunder (Level 1 Rookie) at 4/28/2009 5:52:59 AM

Ohh man! So nice *-*
I love this game and this pic makes me feels able to do everything xD

user
Breton Slivka (Level 2 Kukyu) at 4/26/2009 6:43:06 PM

It's a great peice, there's no doubt of that. But I've always wondered what kind of person is impressed by the use of mspaint with a shitty laptop mouse. What kind of personality do they have outside of the pixel art world?

It strikes me as a little bit like being impressed that someone cleaned the bathroom at the local YMCA using nothing but a toothbrush and spit. It's not like you get a cleaner bathroom that way. It just takes longer, and it is more frustrating. Likewise, it's not as if mspaint adds a little something special to the artwork. The finished product is not better by virtue of the fact that the tools that were used were of poor quality.

The only conclusion that I can draw is that these commentators believe that suffering is virtuous, and that being clever (by using better tools for instance) is cheating. So I wonder what kind of relationships these people have? what kind of jobs do they have? what are their parents like?

Now perhaps the original artist is poor, and  can't afford any special software, and only has a crappy handmedown laptop and can't afford the $20 to buy a decent mouse. This isn't in itself praiseworthy. Perhaps it's the contrast between the poor quality of the tools, and the quality of the work that is striking. Perhaps this is about a thrilling narrative of a down on his luck guy overcoming adversity and producing great art anyway.

That's okay, but I don't think the conclusion to draw is that we should all use MSPaint and squander hundreds of hours on a single peice that could be used to make dozens of peices. Or animated peices. Or going out and experiencing life and all its glories, outside the insulated worlds of collossi and katamari. Original inspiration! Creating things that are not derivative! If you're to finally get a job making art, where time is money, I don't think your boss is going to crucify you for taking a shortcut that results in the same quality of work, but takes much less time. (no dammit, I want you to use only MSPAINT with your hand tied behind your back, and I want this project to be 2 years behind schedule!)

Maybe the only thing you have to clean the bathroom is a toothbrush and your own spit, and nobody has told you about things like floor cleaner, disinfectant spray or mops. You really couldn't be blamed for doing it that way. But what should I  think about someone that uses a toothbrush because they simply insist on it? All the better things are available, but they just really insist that there's something better about the toothbrush, and using a mop is cheating.

Anyways. Just a simple question, really. Just always been curious.
