I dont understand how someone could -NOT- find this amazing.

it looks like living pixels creating something.  Looks awesome. Its reminds me of those replicator things on that stargate show.

Everyone's process varies, some people make black blobs and fill them in, I consider that easier, due to the clear outline, but Im not gonna attack someone for doing it.

"Pure"  what the hell is pure to you?  --Strictly AA and selout?  I actually try to avoid antialiasing.  If you understand planes, you dont even need much smoothing.

You dont even need selective outlining.

You use Pixels the way i draw :P i just draw random crap, then if i can see something in the piece i then aim to make it look like what i have just imagined. I would try it with Pixels, but my Pixeling skills suck... but great job :)

Nice to see am not the only one who has a vivid imagination :P

Its called work-flow management people!

Seriously who cares what tools a person uses as long as its pixel art at the final product, all references are quoted and the colour count is reasonable.

I'm a programmer but I know all the artists at work get told the same thing SPEED and CONSISTENCY! Crippling yourself is pointless you might as well say all pixel art should be done in text editor as the original games were done before art software.

"the line tools and the bucket fill are acceptable, as they do nothing more than speed up the work without impacting how the work looks." (From that wikipedia article Perciv@l posted).

If you see the galleries, other works that are not "japanese console style", are accepted and widely popular, that is NOT the problem. I think many don't consider it pure pixel art because the partial opacity tool gives an automated effect that affects how the work will look. I like your art too, this is not critisism, just trying to clarify things a bit.

as long as you cleaned it up and refined it manually pixel by pixel, i would consider this pixel art. and its an interesting style keep it up i like what i see.

It's just as it looks. In the beginning I had no idea what I was about to draw. Once I thought I saw something, I started refining it.

fuck pure this and that, its on a pixel level, and its art, ENOUGH SAID. good work ilkke.

q: do you have a goal in mind when you start off with these or is the process as organic as it looks?

If you want to know what pure pixelart is, you can get a notion by reading this:

Amen to that! I'm so tired of comming on here and people getting all preachy about their view of pixel art. I'm seen isometric piecies that use opacity, and it's still pixel art, so why not this? Pixel art is a style, not a set of limitations. Get over it and let this artist publish his amazing work!

Adarias, opacity was only used to make the inital mess.
Even if I used opacity or paintbucket or anything, i can't see your point. I did this using the industry standard program at the time, 9 or 10 years ago to put every single pixel where it is! Everything was done manually using a mouse, with indexed palette.
I think pixel art is more than just tilesets and sprites, or a certain style of pixelling.
I don't really want to argue or challenge anyone's point of view, but I think I'm entitled to a bit of freedom, and frankly I don't understand what 'pure' pixelart is supposed to be.
If ppl have problem with this, then these pictures will be removed and I won't post anything that isn't japanese console games style pixels.

each of these wip's only shows that it isnt pure pixelart.  don't get me wrong, i like the pieces, but using even simple things like partial opacity isnt the same as pixelart.  on a different site, i would give full marks.
