This was made quite awhile ago actually, I was able to get this onto this computer by giving my mom a disk and she emailed it to me.
Because computer issues, btw.

Well anyway enjoy the mockup I like how the graphics came out...and Max Rider sure was happy when I showed him this.

Also thanks for the crits over at another forum.

Updated, thanks a plenty for your responses, I did fix up a few things
First, I darkened the road so it's not as distracting anymore
Second, added larger shadows under the trees and removed one color  so that they stand out more.
Third I added partial black outlining to the character so that he stands out much more than he used to.
Fourth adjusted the red pallette, and the Rupee's palette.
Fifth got rid of the clumped forest on the top
Sixth Added a large beetle enemy, the lines were by Max Rider, and shaded by me.

I don't like how... chaotic the piece is. I'd abhor playing this game just because it'd be so hard to tell what was going on.

Check out the tilesets of some Zelda games for reference, and make your background stuff less vibrant, and it'll be awesome.

The trees seem to look like they are laying flat on the ground, the rest is awsome though!

the grass looks kind of raugh. the stones and flowers on it are scattered like a childs toys. maybe you could make certain kinds of grass, like short, long, wild, half dead, mixed with sand. but not as a grass decoration, but a own style of underground.

That red bar is fire magic power, you get three different elements in this game for magical attacks and each element has it's own bar. So far Max Rider has only 2 elements, and is on his way to the third.

You need to do more practise with form and depth, then the majority of the problems you have with things like this will fade. The only realy big other thing I'v noticed is that there is no one consistant style in sprites, background or hud. You should always define and understand a style you are about to use throughout a project, even if it's just one mockup.

And @Shawn about the puddle, I was actually going for some transparent affects because of the shallow puddle. If it's too blue lemme know.

Alright, starting off. The pallete is great. The hearts at the top are ugly and should be redone. The trees all look alike and they don't look good either for that matter. The trunk is too randomly shaded and clumpy. The leaves are too squared and flat, which makes it look shit. The bush doesn't even look like a bush, if it actually is one. The dirt is overdone and makes it look funky. The trees shouldnt be so close together either, btw. Also the character blends in too much with the background, the red thing at the top has a weird pallete which makes it stand out too much. Thewater is really ugly and not smooth enough to look like water. The trees should have a shadow to make it look like it's not a part of the grass. Also is that a rupee?

yeah, too few ramps for the color count and way too much contrast everywhere so it doesnt read.  break things down into simpler regions of only 2-3 shades, close for background, spread for characters,  and youll do much better with readability.

Also, trees are the same as the grass makes me dizzy >.<

its a very good start though and most of the changes you should make from here are palette not drawing

Not bad.
But you don't need outlines. What you need is to make the ground texture less 'noisy' and contrasted. Try using fewer colors on it.
Also the tree trunks are not really good, they look like stacks of coconuts. There could be shadows under the trees, too.

The Human Hair's colour blends into the ground. You could give it an outline like OMGFossil said or change the brown.

nice, but you could provide some outlines to the objects like trees and especially with the character, they blend too much with the background
