" Bada bum bum badapow!! (excited asian voice) NEW CHARRENGAH'!!"

Awahh? You didn't think you bastards could just do a lil' fighter comp', and leave me out of it, did ya?
Heh, just kiddin'. Any who, I have a confession to make. As many know, I'm a huge fighting game nut. So when this challenge was created, I thought, "cool beans, right up my alley!" However, the only idea I could think of, was some Asian mix of many martial arts. So the character is basically made up of shaolin(monk), ninjitsu, Samurai, and even japanese drama, Kabuki, (hence the name Amalgalm.)
"Kabuki, Kabuki, hmm? Why does this sound so familiar?", I thought to myself. So I kept animating, and animating. And finally, I took a look at the stance I decided to settle with, and at about 80% completion, BOOM, it hit me: Holy crap! I think I was just sub-consciously inspired by "Kyoshiro's" design, from Samurai Shodown! I found this interesting, at least. I hope this doesn't disqualify me, as the idea of this type of fighter has been done before.(by the way, his weapon is a hook that hangs off the end of his large head dress.)

Any hoo, good luck to all!!

Yuppers, I'm still learning as I go along, with animation. Kinda' fun, though,to learn from your mistakes. Technically, yes, it should have a 2nd place ribbon, but the way the challenges are programmed, they're not set to shift places, if entries are removed after it's complete. But imho, I don't think this should be moved to 2nd place, after the whole "Pain" debacle. I deserved 3rd place, and think it's fine that it should be there...

I was thinking about this piece a few days ago when looking at something:) Still a busy ass pic, but still cool!

Shouldn't this have a second place ribbon now?

I agree with the critique as well. I've learned much about animating sprites from then till now. Unfortunately, I called it quits on this piece, a long time ago. Thanks for the critique though!

My comments on the art (not the artist).

There's a lot of unnecessary movements that make the sprite unreadable. The shirt flapping on the left shoulder and all those funky movements in that thing in the background are incredibly distracting and break up the characters form. And lining up the hand with the lapel of the shirt pretty much makes it disappear. It's also got a major pulse to it that makes it look like a very unnatural movement. Instead of having a nice jumping temp of [up,hang... down, absorb...up,etc]. it just goes updownupdownupdown.

Basically, everything's moving around too much and in too many different directions, and at an improper rhythm.

Again, not about the artist, about this 2 year old art.

Yeah this is too awesome =o that pose is complicated, well to me anyways. Great work!

the animation seems weird, but overall 4/5

I was all, like, is that a tit or a nose,
and then I find out it's a shoulder! :D

A bit over the top, but oh so nice.

Really neat-looking, but really hard to read.

It's very busy, but i just love the vibrance and life in it. It's a shame the anim is repeated backwards though...

Quite busy, which I like. Hard to make out, doesn't matter.
Took one of my votes.

A lot of elements are fighting for attention in this piece. You need to simplify some things to make this work.

Very nice though, lots of talent went into that one

This is cool! (I thought Samurai Showdown as well at first glance, but it's totally your own design and looks nothing like it). I like  how everything is moving but his headress(or what is on his back) doesn't flow as well as the tail coat, which is very nicely done. I think that also the colours could be less close together. But this is really nice work man!

Very ambitious combination... the overall effect works great although the body does get lost a little in the headdress(?).

He looks like he's about to fall down and is desperately trying not to. Also it took me a second to grasp the content, first it was just moving colors, altough they are very nice and lively.

wow!

Fool (Level 6 SWAT) at 5/27/2007 11:03:28 PM
That is quite spectacular indeed.=) I like it even though hate fighter thing just as much as you dragons. =P
It looks  a bit unbalance though - from the link from Kyoshiro hairpiece  takes care of that.

Oh yeah, animation is outstanding. (whispering)...most likey an incident, you lucky basturd.=))

I love this, though it is a little busy looking.

user
AdamPlays (Level 6 SWAT) at 5/27/2007 9:06:12 PM
I really love the movement and the colors look nice to me - but the lines of action point towards his head, yet it's not big or bright enough to take attention away from the headdress.  His head should be more of a focal point in detail and color.  Still I'm pretty sure I'm voting for this!

I hope this one wins, he reminds me of Vega from the Street Fighter games.

user
Setzer (Level 8 Cannibal) at 5/27/2007 7:48:20 PM
This is very difficult and confusing; looking at each part I can tell what it is, but looking at it as a whole all I see are colors jumping and dancing around :x
Desaturating some of the things could defenitely help.

user
eckered (Level 5 Killer Klown) at 5/27/2007 6:33:38 PM
you should -desaturate the thing on his back, as it is REALLY destractng. -add a shadow under the arm to our right, as its rather unreadable at 1x.' -apply a darker outline on his right arm, as it really confused me at 1x. anyway, this thing is prety awasome, and there will have to be some prety kickass competicion for this not to get one of my votes. (seems theres some sort of spacing glitch, as this post kinda got messed up when i hit post.)
