Don't change it! I'd like to see something like this done on a larger scale.. like a Pokemon - Ancient Eastern Civ. Can't really see how the evolution happends, as stated earlier, but pretty interesting regardless. The style is really close though.

The original idea I had was having 3 bears - baby bear, mama bear and papa bear. I guess I got too carried away. Anyhow.... I love it as it is and I'm not changing it.

This seems more like a group or characters than a pokemon evolution. But I do appreciate the similarities you gave to them, like the curls and the colors.
