The lighting is ambiguous for a reason, it's an old trick when making 2d game art, it allows you to place props are characters into the environment with minimum lighting confliction. Like you say, it works but it really shouldn't. If it were a a painting I would have tackled the lighting in a completely different way.

You are cool for knowing what that rhyme is really about.Crits:
* The sphere on top of the fence'post' is inexplicably highlighted
* the road is a bit ambiguous -- it took me awhile to realize that that was what it was meant to look like.

A beautiful scene. I only find the lighting timid, inconsistent and weak to crit. I would think the far trees' light would have slightly more on the trunk and a tiny bit on the grass between the tree and the tombstone. Lightsource definition is quite confusing all over. It works as is so its not a huge crit ;) Same goes for the tombstone to the right of the fire in the top right corner is way too big following the perspective but doesn't really stand out either...hmmmKeywords
