Here's a mockup for a fantasy platform-rpg game, gba style.

The main character is a 'cat-guy' wizard who's still learning his first tricks of magic. His little friend is there to help him on his journey.

This moment tries to capture the exact moment when the player faces a 'no-go' area and is reminded to use one of the character spells.

comments appreciated!

It's a really good idea, design, etc., but  there are too many colors.

(i love the dog, it's great!)

Looks very well done, congrats.

This looks awesome. I'd love to play this game!

hey buloght! Thank you very much for all the nice comments and compliments. Yeah, since i'm a cartoonist/animator, originally my colors tend to the "light" side. Anyway, the cartoony-feel is intended on this piece. Thanx a lot for all the nice and important tips on contrast/shading you gave here. I'm always working on improving my art! And congrats, your pieces are always impressive!

I think your style is great in terms of drawing and design :).

Right now your biggest concern is colour management and concervation. Your contrast is slightly varying, sometimes you have colours next to each other that doesn't mix well, for example some of the greens they hinder each other more than compliment when next to eachother and are not always visisble.  And then you have a much brighter color also next to a few closely-ranged colours. You could even out your range slightly more. Contrast is key, but even if you pick your colours closer together which is extremely common, try to pick colours not hurting each other, if you know what I mean. I would say in your pic examples are the brown mixed in with the tree green in leaves (dithering part on back trees) as well as a couple of different greens next to each other, mostly in the trees. Also try to keep your saturation level the same on the same depth. Your mountains in the back have about 4 blues all very different in saturation, all of them on the same level (desaturated more than the foreground) would give them a much more faded look as distance mountains.

It's hard to explain, but if you could perfect your colour selection, choosing them on consistent ranges you will become a lot better pixeller. Also you have a very light palette, it might be good adding a lot more darker shadow and colours throughout, otherwise lighting sort of counts for nothing.

The yellow 2 at the bottom is very jaggy. You could try out some aa too on the right tree into the bg. DarkfalzX is a great example of the colours

I didn't mean to post this much, grr haha :D. It's a great piece and lovely design.

I like the  dithered bits in the mountain, it gives it more of a rugged-mountainous texture.

Nice work Starchild.

Looks like a really fun game to play. The animation is really cool, but I reckon it would be cooler still if you animated his head and legs (and have his hair bob up and down). I like the "Guess it's time for a spell" bit.

Starchild (Level 1 Rookie) at 7/27/2007 7:17:17 AM

I have edited the mountains a little (i like to use dithering...to give that classic 'game' look...but yes, with 105 colors i can't say they are really necessary here, hehe...)  Will maybe try to limit colors more next time then use it, or simply use more colors and don't! Thanx a lot for the input.

Nice mockup, the colors are really good.

jalonso (Level 11 Godfather) at 7/27/2007 6:20:07 AM
Indeed, over 64 colors don't dither ;)

Gas 13 (Level 9 Federal Agent) at 7/27/2007 4:46:40 AM
Agreed with Josiah, since you don't count colors (and since you have 105 you don't :)) there's no reason to use dithering.

The mockup is really nice and warm.

You know, i tried to not over-animate here...I'd normally do some head-movement, but since there's so much happening with his hands, tail and body... probably the head would only distract from the 'spell-posing'! Thanx for the comments!

Josiah (Level 8 Marshal) at 7/26/2007 7:03:41 PM
Too much dithering in the mountain background in my opinion.

But the mockup itself is great! Nice animation as well, the legs could use some movement though, and maybe some movement for the head.

There can be debate wether head and legs should move or not, but it is your best piece on Pixel Joint to date, it looks very professional and it rocks!
