personally I think the stars are too uniform...have a look at this as an example - http://pixeljoint.com/pixelart/24756.htm ... the stars are placed in a seemingly random way, which gives it a realistic effect, and makes it much more interesting to look at...

and also with your piece, maybe there are just too many stars in the bg at the moment, this seems to really pull focus away from the character.

I think you are right about it being the background. It looks better in the thumbnail. The tengu gets to small and is just floating in the middle.

Something about THIS background seems wrong. I don't know if I can pin-point it but wonder
• too busy for your awesome simplistic style
• color choices too strong for the character
• b/w flatten the illusion
• begs for subtle moving animation

...its something and it feels like its in the BG not the character.
