This was for an adventure game I am working on, however it is not what I wanted, will be redone later in its entirety when I go back to the game. There are a lot of things I would change, but since I won't be using it, I might as well post it here haha.

The flame was referenced in shape from a gif I googled.

I also wanted to still make the small stream and animate it, also have the flame have animated effect on surroundings.

[edit] This will be used again in my game (thanks for the kind feedback), with added anims.

Absolutly awesome. This is in the top ten of the best pixel art pieces I've ever seen.

Antago (Level 1 Rookie) at 6/10/2008 11:43:12 PM
it's truly incredible!

Slemsvamp (Level 5 Lieutenant) at 6/10/2008 4:30:48 PM
Woah, awesome!

Mindsreturn (Level 3 Private Eye) at 6/1/2008 3:16:44 PM
Looks good. With your suggested additions it'll be really realistic.

Pixel2Perfection (Level 1 Rookie) at 5/23/2008 9:06:15 PM
Awesome. But I have a feeling that if you put a bit more animation to it, it would be FANTASTICC.
Like Award-Winning FANTASTIC.

AndyOaks (Level 1 Rookie) at 3/14/2008 2:10:50 AM
lovelllllly! Great atmostphere and I love the torch flame animation. It loops really well.

RevoltOfAges (Level 1 Depressed) at 12/22/2007 8:20:16 PM
How can this not be what you wanted? This is AWESOME!

ultima (Level 2 Hired Gun) at 11/29/2007 8:12:31 AM

I love the detail on the trees.

Pink Goo (Level 1 Depressed) at 11/23/2007 3:30:55 PM
When i saw this first time, I found myself watching it for few minutes. This is a marvelous masterpiece. Can I marry it?

punyek (Level 1 Thug) at 11/20/2007 3:33:23 AM

Great jonb on firs man! You deserve it

zyndikate (Level 1 Jukyu) at 11/17/2007 9:05:58 AM
awesome, enough said :)

Huggkruka (Level 1 Rookie) at 10/14/2007 9:36:45 PM
Angles and lights are great. If you really want to go crazy make the background flicker with the torches! Just kidding, this piece doesn't get much better.

beam (Level 1 Jukyu) at 10/14/2007 3:57:10 PM
This is really amazing

Doomcreator0 (Level 6 SWAT) at 10/14/2007 2:52:07 PM

He never said it was 12 colors. Only 12 frames

Still nice piece overall. I'd be surprised if this didn't get one of the top pixels of the month.

jamienos (Level 2 Flatfoot) at 10/14/2007 8:28:29 AM
Wow.

Dr Dr0ol (Level 1 Rookie) at 10/11/2007 7:45:58 PM
very, very interesting....

Broli (Level 1 Rookie) at 10/11/2007 5:45:14 PM
Great choice of colors. For 12 colors, this is amazing. You did a great job.

Jiwestone (Level 2 Flatfoot) at 10/11/2007 1:11:43 AM
Oooh, lovely, makes me want to point & click:)

mangatic (Level 1 Depressed) at 10/10/2007 8:00:06 AM
GREAT!!!!!!.......

iSTVAN (Level 8 Cannibal) at 10/10/2007 4:59:32 AM
Awesome background, buloght! You've out done yourself. Great sense of atmosphere here. I love it.

Zeh (Level 1 Rookie) at 10/9/2007 6:04:06 PM

The atmosphere is perfect!

5/5

sondre (Level 1 Rookie) at 10/9/2007 1:45:54 PM

wow, that's some impressive dithering

not too certain about the greenish tint of the light/flames on the other hand (may be the monitor though)

Badassbill (Level 8 Cannibal) at 10/9/2007 1:26:14 PM
wow, I'd love to work on an adventure game with you some time.

cocefi (Level 1 Depressed) at 10/9/2007 8:55:58 AM
*speechless*

exocet (Level 5 Captain) at 10/9/2007 4:37:08 AM
Nice scene, especially the atmosphere it conveys.

de Thch (Level 1 Private) at 10/8/2007 11:54:17 PM
Extraordinary!!

skeddles (Level 9 Necrophiliac) at 10/8/2007 4:54:51 PM
1 word: amazinglyawesomecoolness.

rajkosk8 (Level 3 Private Eye) at 10/8/2007 3:06:57 PM
exelent love the mood it radiates

Koch (Level 6 Made) at 10/8/2007 2:24:12 PM
Excellent atmosphere!

The_Elder (Level 1 Seaman) at 10/8/2007 2:02:52 PM
Totally magnificent!

Biffo (Level 1 Rookie) at 10/8/2007 12:53:38 PM
As to the flatness, I imagine as a background it's perfect.  You wouldn't want the background competing wiht the foreground elements anyway.  This is an unbelievable piece.

indorin (Level 1 Rookie) at 10/8/2007 12:24:21 PM
very nice :)fantastic

iLKke (Level 7 Mass Murderer) at 10/8/2007 10:46:41 AM
Great!
Only thing I don't like is that two big trees have their tops coloured differently. I understand they are supposed to fog away, but I think you could have made the transition less abrupt between those brownish and greenish colors.

FAVd!

Elk (Level 5 Assistant Manager) at 10/8/2007 10:08:42 AM
darkshire ^^°!

Rikas (Level 1 Rookie) at 10/8/2007 9:02:08 AM
Reminds me of Monkey Island 2 which i think is a good thing :)

Snovind (Level 1 Rookie) at 10/8/2007 8:48:33 AM
A superb peice 5/5
looks great

Sabata (Level 3 Hatchikyu) at 10/8/2007 8:18:20 AM
thats all I can say.

buloght (Level 6 SWAT) at 10/8/2007 6:54:41 AM
I don't deny anything :D No, seriously I know about the flatness, was still gonna make them (the one tree in particular) more rounder, but I am just too lazy to add another pixel to this and its already three months old. Weeeh.

stickman: Yes, a pointy clicky adventure about barbarians.

Thanks for the comments :D

jamon (Level 8 Marshal) at 10/8/2007 3:50:32 AM
fantastic work!

Larwick (Level 8 Shodan) at 10/8/2007 3:02:33 AM
Oi! I never said it was a bad thing... just pointing it out. :P

Stickman (Level 4 Deputy) at 10/8/2007 3:00:52 AM
Great work! The pencily sketchy feel of the trees suit the scene perfectly. Is this for a point and click adventure?

ElectroNico (Level 3 Sergeant) at 10/8/2007 1:32:32 AM
This is just AMAZING !!! Great anim and details ! There's life in there ! Great work ! Fav and 5/5.

Packrat (Level 7 General Manager) at 10/8/2007 1:09:01 AM
Are you kidding me. This is epic. *Jawdrop*

dumbo (Level 9 Executioner) at 10/7/2007 10:17:27 PM
This has skill all over it...

Wonderful work indeed!!!

jalonso (Level 11 Godfather) at 10/7/2007 6:03:34 PM
I find the flatness the unique aspect for this scene. I see lots of 1930s-1940s Disney quality in this unique approach to the flatness. I think Lar needs to look at it again from another angle : /

ThereIsNoCure (Level 11 Godfather) at 10/7/2007 5:57:30 PM
skeetskeet mawfawka

ooshmaster (Level 5 Soldier) at 10/7/2007 5:24:50 PM
This is amazing! there is a certain quality to it that makes it special, it's hard to describe, it has a hand-drawn look to it, kind of like the backgrounds for Monkey Island 2 (Which really was hand drawn.) Excellent work.

pixelblink (Level 8 Marshal) at 10/7/2007 4:48:15 PM
wow! scene of the year in my books! With Larwick mentioning that the trees "seem a bit flat" - I think it helps give a bit of cartoonish realism to this scene, which is what I think you were going for. It's too bad you can't use this for your game.

Larwick (Level 8 Shodan) at 10/7/2007 4:37:24 PM
Those animations are fantastic. Brilliant scene. Some of your trees seem a little flat to me. But lovely work.

buloght (Level 6 SWAT) at 10/7/2007 1:51:41 PM
Thanks for the nice comments everyone :)

varock_shade (and others who mentioned this): I agree, I still had to do that (but room will no longer be used), I did have it so initially, but I hadn't come round to it once I upgraded the fire animation, as some would know who saw the thread.

tomic: the feeling is mutual :D

inkspot: yeah, I had a hard time at the river and since I wasn't going to use it anymore my meeting with the river animation would have to wait for another day. I did have a few go's, but failing ones :). There are a lot of things that isn't correct for the game, and design wise too I messed up a little not for what I had in mind initially, happens when I don't do enough design sketches.

josiah: The river is left blankish since I haven't done the animation haha :(

Thanks again all!

ceddo (Level 6 Serial Killer) at 10/7/2007 1:37:52 PM
Wow, this is superb. A still image would have been excellent, but those animated torch flames make it fantastic. Faved!

Josiah (Level 8 Marshal) at 10/7/2007 1:09:42 PM

This is excellent, the fire's animation is very fluent, and the image is very atmosphereic. However that stream of water could use some flowing animation. But I'm guessing you didn't get around to it, huh?

surt (Level 10 Maniac) at 10/7/2007 12:24:14 PM
Beautiful. Needs some light flicker on the trees near the torches though. As is the torches don't look like part of the scene.

ThereIsNoCure (Level 11 Godfather) at 10/7/2007 12:18:26 PM
I remember when I made this.

CircleOfTheDarkOnes (Level 2 Flatfoot) at 10/7/2007 12:08:42 PM
The fire's awesome.

inkspot (Level 4 Button Man) at 10/7/2007 11:59:39 AM
Haha, poor buloght couldn't manage the flowoing river :D

AdamPlays (Level 6 SWAT) at 10/7/2007 10:59:31 AM
Breathtaking.

Mirre (Level 6 Serial Killer) at 10/7/2007 10:31:21 AM
@ _ @ Damnit... this must be one of the best pixelart pieces I've seen this YEAR. Love the subtle motion in the animation of the torches. Makes the picture really come alive in a mysterious way (:

dogmeat (Level 7 General Manager) at 10/7/2007 9:36:12 AM
I love this, now with more style and awesomeness!

Kaiseto (Level 4 Button Man) at 10/7/2007 9:34:32 AM
Holy crap o_O That's awesome. The fire stands out especially. Very, very awesome.

jalonso (Level 11 Godfather) at 10/7/2007 8:56:24 AM
I'm too old to be treated this way...I nearly had a stroke.

*downloaded as my new desktop picture :D

Darth Mandarb (Level 6 Serial Killer) at 10/7/2007 8:41:51 AM

I was wondering when I'd see this show up on here ...

Great work, as always.  I did like some of the river edits made over at AGS, but this is still excellent without them!

Fool (Level 6 SWAT) at 10/7/2007 8:36:26 AM
Hey, where's a river gone? =o
Awesome work, well, you know that.=)

umcelinho (Level 1 Thug) at 10/7/2007 8:28:54 AM

that looks VERY amazing!!!

hey, since you've animated the flames, why not push it a lil forward and animate some wind on the grass as well and some night creature, like an owl, or a bat, or some small rodents on a tree..?

inkspot (Level 4 Button Man) at 10/7/2007 8:28:19 AM
Ah, whats wrong with it then? I remember it being in AGS forums. Nice work!

DJD (Level 4 Button Man) at 10/7/2007 8:12:02 AM
Good god you are so talented. You also must have an incredibly amount of patience to make something this beautiful and, when not satisfied, be prepared to redo it from scratch. By far my favourite piece from you, great job!

greenraven (Level 5 Killer Klown) at 10/7/2007 8:01:47 AM
No real surprises here, awesomeness as always.

Faktablad (Level 6 SWAT) at 10/7/2007 7:54:18 AM
It's amazing how much the flame animation brings it to life!

mikl3 (Level 7 Sheriff) at 10/7/2007 7:50:55 AM
Oh, fuck, you make me crying.
I think I should kill myself now...
this is one of the best pixel art EVER!!!

soda (Level 9 Vice President) at 10/7/2007 7:42:38 AM

dakael (Level 5 Killer Klown) at 10/7/2007 6:45:54 AM
Marvelous, simply amazing ...

Reo (Level 9 Executioner) at 10/7/2007 6:42:39 AM
Did i ever mention that i LOVE you!

The B.O.B. (Level 10 Master Sniper) at 10/7/2007 6:31:06 AM

Why do you always have to make me so jealous of your scenes! I wuv it! I remember when you first showed it to me as a wip. Though I must say, I really wish you would have took the other pixeler's advice/edit from the other forum this was posted in, in making the reflected light flicker and wobble back and forth on the trees as well. Still 10 X better than I can do, though...(glad to have you back temporarily, lol)

F A V ' D...

tomic (Level 10 Lieutenant General) at 10/7/2007 5:42:50 AM

ooh, i missed this 'holy shit.. this bastard' feeling over the last months =P

awesome piece, welcome back!

Varock Shade (Level 7 Underboss) at 10/7/2007 5:42:32 AM
you could have made the glow on the trees etc. flicker a bit, because the light/glow is too constant now... still very very nice piece
