working on this special challenge was unusually fun. unusually because i could finish it in time, and fun because, It's me, Metaru! its me on these two things that i really love and i believe are the ones that identifies all my works: Robots and Steam Punk. oh well, and this strange tendence to portrait myself in the most bizarre ways.

the title? "Steam Golem". Golems were enourmous, masive creatures created from diverse materials, from raw meat to steel. all of them prowerfull in physical strengh, but totally dumb, stupid to the extreme sometimes of being incapable of follow a simple order like "protect me". all golems, however, were just shadows of their creators, as they'll never got a soul of their own.

"I've used a little aplet to choose the AA colors for me"

D:
...
Anyhow, yeah, I think you've got all the colors you need already; I don't think you need to add any.

Metaru (Level 8 Brigadier General) at 11/19/2007 11:36:43 AM
well, that was actually an AA not generated by me, I've used a little aplet to choose the AA colors for me, so its just a reference. i don't really feel that i need such 'help'. however, you got a poit about using the purples yo AA the transition between the black to brown, and probably from black to blue also. i'll try it asap.

Hatch (Level 3 Private Eye) at 11/19/2007 10:41:37 AM
Nice, but it seems a bit timid. I think you could go black/dark purple -> purple -> blue (or whatever). I also think (not sure, don't have time to futz with it ATM) you could use one of your purplz to go from black -> brown (jacket).

Dunno, don't mistake me for any kind of AA expert :F

Also, it looks like you missed some of the roughest spot, such as the mouth

Metaru (Level 8 Brigadier General) at 11/18/2007 8:31:41 AM
like this maybe?

Hatch (Level 3 Private Eye) at 11/17/2007 6:03:37 PM
I really do. I mean, it can't hurt anything*, right? it's just one more finishing pass.

*unless one is terrible at AA

Metaru (Level 8 Brigadier General) at 11/17/2007 5:49:22 PM
do you really think that? because i truly don't want to mess with Antialiasing until I have mastered my skills with color choice.

Lollige (Level 9 Necrophiliac) at 11/17/2007 10:49:49 AM
Final colors are way better than what you have started with!

Hatch (Level 3 Private Eye) at 11/17/2007 8:50:16 AM
Great job man. I'd love to see you do more antialiasing on your works though, I think it could really take them to the next level.

@Dumbo&PCow: well, it resembles more aspects of me, as a person i general(the things i like, my general attitude, my fascination for robots, mechanics and steam, my love for hatch's steel palete:D), rather than a photo realistic image with my facial features on it, that's why I aimed for a more caricaturesque style. surely, my face is more than a pair of thick eyebrows and a steel plate, but i don't believe that a photo of me would help to compare. its not a representation of my face, it is a representation of myself in general.

Metaru (Level 8 Brigadier General) at 11/17/2007 7:50:30 AM
@Lemon: well, I've aimed to a more cell-shaded couloring for this one. ignore these specs on the boiler at the back, they are not meant to be texture or something like that.

@Shadow Gamer: its Spanish.

Metaru (Level 8 Brigadier General) at 11/17/2007 7:47:47 AM
@PJB21:yeah, i know what you mean. If you see the Wip, you'll notice that a previous version was in fact made all using sephia tones, and it was my original intention, but i found these colors boring. as krisys told me at the forums, the linear had quite a dinamism that colors totally lacked, so i decided to use more vivid colors to emphasise the general feeling of 'live' in the picture(where in this sephia version of it was kinda... dead). although it distances from the original color scheme of Steam Punk pieces...

Metaru (Level 8 Brigadier General) at 11/17/2007 7:41:34 AM
@surt: Well, it's not 'exactly' a golem powered by steam, in fact since Golems are rather magical than mechanical entities, technically such thing doesn't exist. but, considering that golems could be seen as part of the concept of 'artificial humanoids' (since they are not created by nature) where a robots-an android specifically- coexist. well, the image has a deeper interpretation too wich every element that appears, after all, it is a self portrait.

l3m0n5 (Level 4 Deputy) at 11/17/2007 7:03:01 AM

i agree that its well done overall but i also agree that the back of the jacket could use some more texture/shading...but overall well done :D

The w.i.p  is cool!

Shadow-gamer (Level 4 Lieutenant) at 11/17/2007 5:08:46 AM
What language is the title?

PJB21 (Level 2 Dealer) at 11/17/2007 2:09:56 AM

quite nice piece, i like your use of lines.

one thing thats really bugging me, despite your steampunk style, the colour scheme/pallette really doesnt suit that, it needs to be far stronger sepia'd. the red and blue just dont work. (im a big fan of the steampunk style and as such can get rather picky, sorry XD)

good luck =)

surt (Level 10 Maniac) at 11/16/2007 11:49:27 PM
Good stuff.
Back of the jacket could do with some shading.
If you're a steam golem shouldn't the boiler be integrated into your body? It just looks like it's strapped onto your back.

dumbo (Level 10 Master Sniper) at 11/16/2007 9:21:31 PM
I think the face (even though steel) should have some more features to it. Don't you? I mean it's a portrait. I don't know what you look like... but I am sure you have more to your face than just eyes, ears, and hair.
